DescriptionThe mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Founded by FDR in 1938, the March of Dimes funds community programs, advocacy efforts, research, education, and family support services.
The Accounting Intern is responsible for assisting the State Director of Operations with performing accounting processes that are vital to the successful operation of the chapter. This volunteer position offers the opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on accounting and finance experience in a non-profit setting. University/college credit is available. All internships are located at the Westboro, MA office.
ResponsibilitiesWhat You Will Learn
•The chapter’s annual budget and how it is determined
•Fundraising processes and how they lead to successful outcomes for the chapter
•Accounting coding system used by the chapter to identify financial statement accounts
•Appropriate use of Microsoft Excel for accounting and financial processes
•How to operate an online fundraising tool, Customer Relationship Management tool, and JD Edwards accounting software
What You Will Do
•Perform accounting income processing such as deposit registration and journal entries
•Perform accounting payment processing such as searching for vendor payments and maintaining payment vouchers
•Internal accounting management which includes expense allocation, inventory management, donated goods analysis, and organizing related files
•Income and expense reconciliation
•Participate in regional accounting conference calls and weekly chapter staff meetings
•Other office tasks as needs arise, such as preparation for special events and March for Babies fundraising events
Real World Experience
•Attend chapter events such as Board Meetings, fundraisers, and kick-off events
•Create materials needed for chapter events
•Work on actual projects that affect the foundation and its fundraising efforts
•Collaborate with fellow interns and March of Dimes staff to achieve best results for Chapter
