This position will support the Director of Accounting Policy in providing accounting guidance related to proposed transactions and establishing and maintaining corporate accounting and financial reporting policies. The position will also support special projects assigned by the Controller or Director of Accounting Policy.
Provide technical accounting guidance and analysis in support of proposed transactions to ensure conformity with GATX policies and generally accepted accounting principles.
Review and analyze terms of proposed transaction.
Identify and research technical accounting issues.
Prepare analysis of accounting results based on forecasted economics.
Document conclusions for consideration by management.
Support Director of Accounting Policy in establishing and maintaining GATX accounting and financial reporting policies and procedures.
Provide support to business groups as it relates to interpretation and application of accounting policy matters.
Assist in the development and drafting of new policies and revision of existing policies addressing GATX accounting treatment and procedures.
Maintain database of current policies.
Perform and document recurring accounting evaluations (e.g. impairment analyses, hedge effectiveness).
Assist Director of Accounting Policy in monitoring proposed and enacted changes to accounting and financial reporting standards.
Advise management of important developments and potential impact to GATX businesses as appropriate.
Assist in providing training to accounting personnel as required.
Assist in implementation of new accounting standards including the new lease and revenue recognition guidance.
4 .Special projects as assigned by the Controller or Director of Accounting Policy related to accounting and financial reporting matters.
RequirementsEducation and Experience
Bachelors degree required, MBA or Masters in Accounting strongly preferred.
Technical accounting, writing/editing background a plus.
4-6 years working in an accounting-related field (e.g. auditing, transaction services), preferably with a major accounting firm.
Experience performing technical accounting research and applying US GAAP to complex transactions strongly desired.
Strong technical knowledge of US GAAP, particularly with respect to leases, joint ventures and VIE’s, and financial instruments.
Must be able to identify issues, perform research and analysis, and develop and support conclusions.
Strong systems skills (Excel, Word, Powerpoint).
Experience with Microsoft Sharepoint preferred.
