Responsibilities

Macfadden is seeking interns for the summer 2017 term (June – August) and fall 2017 term (September – December), to support USAID's Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) in the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance (DCHA). Program Assistant interns will support OTI’s Field Programs Division, working in the Washington, DC headquarters. Depending on space available, OTI may bring on more than one intern. Interns can expect to have a substantive and rewarding experience as a part of OTI – interns are fully integrated into the OTI teams and are expected to perform as such.
OTI was created in 1994 as a distinct operating unit within USAID to help local partners advance peace and democracy in priority conflict-prone countries. Seizing critical windows of opportunity, OTI works on the ground to provide fast, flexible, short-term assistance targeted at key transition needs. Countries experiencing a significant political transition in the midst of a disaster or emerging from civil conflict have unique needs that cannot be fully addressed by traditional disaster relief. Timely and effective assistance to promote and consolidate peaceful, democratic advances can make the difference between a successful or failed transition. OTI assists in securing peace by aiding indigenous, mostly non-governmental, civil society and media organizations, using such mechanisms as support for re-integration of ex-combatants into civilian society; development of initiatives to promote national reconciliation; identification of quick-impact community self-help projects to meet urgent economic needs; and aid to independent media outlets and community-based organizations to help promote informed debate and broaden public participation. For more information about OTI please see this website.

This position will work with OTI’s Field Programs Division, which is responsible for the development, oversight, and management of OTI country programs. Internship duties will primarily include administrative/operations support, with potential for some program support, for an OTI country program under the supervision of OTI’s Regional Team Leaders in the following regions: Africa, Pakistan, Middle East, Latin America and Caribbean, and Europe & Asia. Interns will be paid $15.04 per hour
