Telecommunications engineers use their technical expertise to provide a range of services and engineering solutions revolving around different modes of communication and information transfer, such as wireless telephony services, radio and satellite communications, internet and broadband technologies.

Most of the work is carried out on a project basis with tight deadlines and well-defined milestones for the delivery of project objectives. Telecommunications engineers are involved across all aspects of service delivery, from carrying out feasibility exercises and determining connectivity to preparing detailed, technical and operational documentation.

Telecommunications engineers are usually employed by telecom service providers, equipment and infrastructure manufacturers, communications software developers, public sector bodies and transport organisations.


A telecommunications consultant is responsible for helping companies decide on which telephone, data communications and video services and equipment are best for their business. Because of the ever-changing nature of technology, the consultant must be knowledgeable about advancements in equipment and needs to be able to identify the changing nature of a business and how it relates to the available technology. Some consultants may be hired for a day to set up the equipment, while others may have longer-term employment.


Consultants are usually required to possess a university degree in economics, business engineering, telecommunications engineering or a similar field. Some experience in telecommunications consulting as a product manager and trainee is preferred. Each successful applicant must have excellent interpersonal skills. An understanding of other languages is an asset. A consultant must be detail-oriented and needs to be precise when communicating facts. Knowledge of the market conditions and the changing technology of telecommunications technology is needed.
