Santa Fe may be the state capitol, but Albuquerque is New Mexico’s largest city, its population topping 550,000; second place Las Cruces has only 100,000. At the Chihuahuan Desert’s upper edge, spanning the Rio Grande and spread at the base of the Sandia Mountains, Albuquerque is a microcosm of state-of-the-art technological focus.

On the famous Route 66, Albuquerque is a destination city that offers more than a little of everything. From food and wine festivals to its International Balloon Fiesta, the city hosts a slew of shows and events. Old Town is the historical district, and the Church of San Felipe de Neri is three centuries old. Petroglyph National Monument is here, as is Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. In contrast, the Q also boasts the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History, the University of New Mexico, and plenty of other unique museums and landmarks.

A city of wide-open spaces, the sky isn’t the limit in Albuquerque. Kirtland Air Force Base is the site for the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space Vehicles Directorate. Sandia National Laboratory is also here, as is Intel Corporation. This is a forward-facing boom town of high-tech professions, including microsystems and nanotechnology, aerospace and aviation defense, semiconductor and computer chip research and manufacturing, directed energy and optics technology, information technology and software development, and biomedical research and biosciences.
