DescriptionSince opening in 1999, MASS MoCA has become one of the world's premier centers for making and showing the best art of our time. With annual attendance of 120,000, it ranks among the most visited institutions in the United States dedicated to new art. More than 80 major new works of art and more than 50 performances have been created through fabrication and rehearsal residencies in North Adams, making MASS MoCA perhaps the most fertile site in the country for new art. The museum thrives on making and presenting work that is fresh, surprising, and challenging.
The Mellon Apprenticeship is a two-year, grant-funded position in performing arts administration. You will receive hands-on training in the day-to-day tasks of managing a busy performing arts season (65 events/year plus 2 festivals), with a particular focus on “confluence” residencies or residencies at the crossroads of visual and performing arts. Past residency artists include, Lucinda Child and Frank Gehry, Hear Lies Love, Laurie Anderson and more.
MASS MoCA exhibits work by many of the most important artists of today—both well known, and emerging—focusing on large-scale and complex installations that are impossible to realize in conventional museums. Our broad, soaring galleries with 110,000 square feet of open, flexible space and their robust industrial character have proven both inspiring and empowering to artists.
An essential and integral part of MASS MoCA's mission are the more than 75 performances staged year-round, including popular music, contemporary dance, alternative cabaret, world music dance parties, outdoor silent films with live music, documentaries, and avant-garde theater.
ResponsibilitiesIn Year 1, you will assist in the planning and implementation of all scheduled performing arts activities and become familiar with our audience and mission, working both in company management, audience services, volunteer coordination and general office tasks. You will work with our curatorial team based in New York City and have the opportunity to develop a proposal for a performing arts residency that crosses between performing and visual arts, which will be included in the MASS MoCA season in Year 2.
Year 2: In addition to continuing work with company management and audience services, you will work closely with the Managing Director on all aspects of producing a “confluence” residency. This will involve working with both our curator in New York as well as our visual arts curatorial team at MASS MoCA. You will review residency proposals and ultimately choose an artist who works across performing and visual arts for a residency that best fits MASS MoCA’s mission. You will be the liaison with the artists and the MASS MoCA staff and work to coordinate all aspects of this residency. You will develop a budget and marketing plan specific to your residency. Throughout the apprenticeship, you will work directly with the Managing Director. This apprenticeship requires a 2 year commitment and includes a generous stipend plus housing.
