Puppets Props and Practical FX Aprenticeship

Monkey Boys Productions, a Philadelphia area production company, mixes old and new techniques to create innovative, dynamic, visually and emotionally stunning work for film, television and stage. Blending our own unique talents, our combined years of working in the entertainment field, our clients needs and our unique sense of fun, we create puppets, practical effects, costumes, and entertainment that is exciting and inspiring for both children and adults.

Since our establishment in 2006, Monkey Boys Productions has had many apprentices. These new puppeteers and puppet builders are over 18 years old and range in experience from college students to experienced arts professionals expanding their skill set. We look for curious, self-motivated individuals whose work will continue to develop beyond their apprenticeship session with us.

Monkey Boys Productions apprentices assist skilled designers and builders on all studio projects, some also join us onstage as puppeteers, and others help teach workshops. A typical day might include hands-on building, a brief lesson on a new material, a shopping run, and help with studio upkeep. Skill-building at the MBP is both self-directed and supported: apprentices are encouraged to ask questions throughout the building process, and are trained in materials and techniques for puppet building. Apprentices may also staff occasional professional development workshops at the MBP, and attend them free of charge.

All MBP apprentices also work on a personal project during their apprenticeship. This project can be as simple as research into a particular type of puppet, a building project, or a short cabaret style performance piece. Work on personal projects takes place outside of apprenticeship hours, though apprentices are invited to use the studio facilities. All apprentices attend a weekly meeting to present progress, and to get assistance & advice on their personal projects from MBP partners.

MBP apprentices work Tues, Weds, & Thurs, 10:00am-6:00pm, for the duration of their apprenticeship. Apprentices may also sign up to help out during other times, on an opt-in basis, and use the resources of the studio to work on their own projects, outside of apprenticeship hours.

Monkey Boys Productions apprenticeships are not paid. Lunch is provided, and we generally eat as a group. College credits can be arranged on a case-by-case basis. If college credit interests you, please indicate that in your application, and include contact information for the appropriate administrators at your school.

Many of the builders and performers we regularly employ at MBP started with us as apprentices. While progress is assessed on a case-by-case basis, all apprentices must complete a second apprenticeship session (or the equivalent at another studio) and portfolio review to be considered for future paid work at the MBP.
