About HBIF:
The Hispanic Business Initiative Fund (HBIF) is an economic development, non-profit organization specializing in providing free bilingual business consulting to Hispanic entrepreneurs trying to establish or expand a business in the state of Florida. It has been assisting Hispanic entrepreneurs for over 20 years in three well-established service regions: Miami, Tampa and Orlando. Here in Miami, the main office is located within the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) in downtown and the Miami Free Zone. There is also a satellite office in Broward County in the city of Hollywood.
Our economic development efforts are focused on two areas:
Education: Free seminars and workshops in Spanish about important topics of interest to entrepreneurs.
Business Consulting and Entrepreneurial Grants: We provide personalized business consulting by either helping entrepreneurs establish a company or to improve their operations. One of HBIF’s distinctive characteristics is its access to entrepreneurial grants. These grants are provided to selected individuals after assessing the business feasibility level. The grants provide funds to fully develop a business or marketing plan, provide training in QuickBooks and design a website and corporate image. HBIF covers the most vital areas in which most small business and start-ups need support.

About the Internship Program:
The HBIF Internship Program seeks to give interns hands-on experience and broad exposure to local economic development and small business management. HBIF has hosted interns since its inception in the early 1990s, and today our former interns can be found around the country working in leading economic development and business positions.

Responsibilities


Interns work with mentors in the following areas:

ECONOMIC AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Work with multiple entrepreneurs to identify business opportunities, strengths and weaknesses in their companies. The student will work with real business owners and will be looking at the company’s operations and finances to address weaknesses and develop recommendations for process improvement.
Conduct market research for specific industries and geographic regions.
Develop basic business plans and marketing strategies for start-ups and established businesses.
Assist in one-to-one business consulting and interview clients.
Work with mentor in the preparation of business cases and materials to present to TAC Committee (fund granting body).
Identify business development opportunities for HBIF’s programs and events.
Assist with funding opportunities to the South Florida Vice-President.

ENTREPRENEURIAL EDUCATION
Collaborate on logistics for seminars and workshops.
Contact potential speakers and partner organizations to coordinate events.
Represent the organization during events and be responsible for follow-up correspondence.

ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT
Document meetings with entrepreneurs in HBIF’s databases.
Update client’s profiles in HBIF’s database.
Provide support in office-related duties (answer the phone, take messages, respond to client inquiries, etc).

MARKETING
Conduct client interviews to write articles or client profiles for HBIF’s e-newsletter.
Conduct online research for relevant news, upcoming events and relevant announcements in the region.

Requirements


Be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in a university or college as a full-time degree-seeking student. Student must be in upper division or graduate level classes AND earn academic credit for the opportunity. No monetary compensation is available.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills in both Spanish and English – Candidate must be fully bilingual as the organization’s clientele is predominantly Hispanic. There will be many instances in which proper Spanish is necessary during client meetings, orientation sessions and telephone interviews.
Strong concentration in business administration, business development and analysis, economics, advertising, marketing, or related field.
Experience with sales and/or consulting is a plus but not required.
Strong communications, interpersonal and analytical skills.
Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Publisher and Power Point.
Ability to pay attention to detail, process work accurately, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Most importantly, student must be able to be creative, resourceful and use knowledge from academic courses to solve the client’s problems.
Intern must be willing to work some evening hours occasionally (between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.).
Intern must be willing to work between 16 to 20 hours per week.
