DescriptionIf you love dogs, exercise, and the outdoors this may be the right internship for you! Top Dog SF is looking for a dedicated and dependable Dog Walker who is passionate about canine care. You will have the opportunity to be bonded, insured, and help you attain your dog walker certification training. You will also see first hand how a boutique dog walking business thrives in San Francisco. Our training methods are Science-Based in order to provide a happy and well-mannered city dog. Our walking team is educated and passionate about reward-based training methods. As a company, we strive to provide a fun and energetic off-leash experience for our dogs and go above and beyond the standard of the industry to ensure the satisfaction of our customers.
ResponsibilitiesPicking up and dropping off dogs safely
Managing key inventory in a safe and secure way
Training and behavior modification of dogs in your care while in the field
Keeping track of hours and maintaining a timely schedule
Participating in bi-weekly staff meetings
Participating in continuing education courses
Weekly Social Media posting
RequirementsApplicants MUST have the following qualifications:
A valid and current California driving license and clean driving record for a minimum of the past 6 years
Ability to think on your feet and to think strategically to plan out daily logistics such as: organizing solo on-leash dog walks, planning efficient driving routes, and preventing dog behavior problems as needed
Must adhere to reward-based training methods (absolutely no use of choke chains, pinch collars, electric shock collars, or other devices designed to scare or physically hurt dogs)
Ability to multi-task, be efficient, be organized and be detail-oriented
Ability to take stressful situations in stride and be calm under pressure
Willing to work on some weekends (if required)
Honest, hard working, be able to take direction, and be happy working alone
A love of the outdoors; all weather conditions including heat, cold and the rain
Be physically fit and strong enough to walk up to 4 miles a day (occasionally more!) and be able to lift large dogs in and out of a vehicle and/or walk up several flights of stairs to pick up and drop off dogs
Ability to see the funny side of a dog throwing up in the car, on you or on your shoes
Possess a smart phone -- Android or iPhone
Be a current resident of San Francisco (no bridge commuters)
Complete and pass a background check and DMV Check
An absolute love of, interest in and enthusiasm for dogs!
An ideal candidate will have the following (we will provide comprehensive training to the right person):
Customer service experience preferred; ability to interact in person with clients at their homes, on the phone and by email in a professional, friendly, and respectful manner
Communication with managers, team and clients and open to feedback and new ideas
Some understanding of and an ability to read dog body language; recognizing when a dog may react aggressively or fear other dogs
Comfort in handling dogs with mild behavior issues (fear, reactivity, dog-dog aggression, etc)
Ability to do some basic training: recall, anti-jump exercises, food/toy/water bowl guarding, on-leash reactivity, aggression management/prevention
To have completed or be prepared to complete one of ACC's approved dog walker schools and complete annual continuing education requirements
Comfortable handling a group of dogs both on and off-leash in designated areas, neighborhoods, in parks and on city streets
Must be flexible and a team player!
