Novvi is a joint venture of Amyris, Inc. and Cosan S.A. based in Emeryville, CA. Novvi is responsible for the development, production, marketing and distribution of high-performance renewable base oils, for use in the lubricants market. By applying Amyris' synthetic biology platform to modify yeast to produce targeted hydrocarbon molecules, Novvi produces base oils from plant sugar sources.
Position Summary
Novvi is looking for an exceptional individual to be part of our interdisciplinary team developing “green” products derived from renewable sources. You must have a working understanding of basic laboratory techniques including using pipettes, balances, volumetric glassware, etc. It is important that you have a passion for science and are excited by the prospect of learning and overcoming new challenges. At Novvi you will have the opportunity to combine your sound lab skills, good judgment, and problem-solving ability to help create disruptive new products that impact the world. This role is open to candidates with education or experience in chemistry, chemical engineering or a related discipline.


• Learn to prepare product blends, evaluate chemical and physical properties
• Send and receive lab samples and laboratory supplies, stock and maintain inventory
• Follow SOPs for standard lab tests and procedures and maintain log sheets
• Learn to operate instruments and bench screens to determine physical properties of materials including: Kinematic viscosity, TGA volatility, DSC, oxidative stability, and more
• Safely operate lab-scale distillation and hydrogenation equipment following SOPs
• Organize chemical inventory and library of formulated materials and ordering new chemicals and additives


• Experience working in a laboratory setting
• Reliably generate results with some guidance, work under little supervision for routine tasks
• Willingness to learn new analytical techniques and concepts
• Proficiency with Excel and able to quickly adapt to new software
• Good organization and attention to detail
• Able to embrace complexity and willing to learn and apply problem solving skills
• Self-motivated and genuinely interested in being part of a team that develops renewable products
• Ability to work closely with a small goal oriented team
