(possible year long Internship)
Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments
Position Description
Office of Communications Intern
$13/Hour Undergraduate Studies
$15 / Hour Graduate Studies
Job Code: IOC-00153

The new internship within the Office of Communications (OC) is being established as one that will provide an additional staff asset to COG and also will make available a significant communications internship to students in the region through their college and graduate-level programs. To accomplish these goals, the period of time for the internship will be extended to include at least a summer session plus an additional semester, or up to one year.
Earlier this year, the OC completed a new Strategic Communications Plan that includes a stronger focus on branding for the Council of Governments, along with the enhanced the use of social media and the development of content for our web site. The OC intern will be a key player in achieving those goals.

The intern will:
• Prepare clip on a regular basis for COG’s staff and members
• Provide an enhanced, regular presence for COG on social media accounts – Twitter and Facebook.
• Assume responsibility for the development of COG videos – including scripting, scheduling and distribution.
• Assist as needed in producing content for blog posts.
Each of these tasks is described in detail in the attached Learning Objectives.
In addition, the individuals selected for this internship will be required to have completed a significant amount of course work in a Journalism or Public Relations curriculum at the undergraduate or graduate level.
To be more valuable to COG and the students selected, the internship will be structured to include more than one summer session. For example, I would want an intern who begins on June 1 to be available to hold the position through December. An intern who begins in January, would, ideally, be available to hold the position through August. The internship will also be available to students after graduation – either at the undergraduate or graduate level – and could then last for up to a year.
