DescriptionNational Defense University (NDU) supports the joint warfighter by providing rigorous Joint Professional Military Education to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and select others in order to develop leaders who have the ability to operate and creatively think in an unpredictable and complex world.
The College of International Security Affairs (CISA) is one of National Defense University's five colleges. CISA educates students from across the international, interagency and interservice communities. Graduates include alumni from 90 countries and every major U.S. federal executive agency.
CISA's mission is to educate and prepare civilian and military national security professionals and future leaders from the United States and partner nations for the strategic challenges of the contemporary security environment. CISA is the Department of Defense flagship for education and the building of partnership capacity in combating terrorism and irregular warfare at the strategic level. CISA prepares students for high-level policy and command and staff responsibilities through a graduate, interagency, and joint professional military education program.
The College offers a Master of Arts Degree in Strategic Security Studies to students enrolled in either a full-time or part-time basis. CISA collaborates with US Government departments and agencies to tailor professional graduate education development programs to equip employees with the knowledge and skills needed to meet the growing and ever-changing demands of today's complex world.
The College is located in Abraham Lincoln Hall on the grounds of historic Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, DC. CISA also offers its Master's Degree program to selected students at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School (JFKSWCS) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
ResponsibilitiesCommunications, Special Events & Public Affairs Internship at College of International Security Affairs National Defense University,Washington D.C.
This communications internship position offers experience in social media management, interviewing, writing, video / multimedia, special events planning, alumni relations, and other areas of Public Relations and Public Affairs. The intern has the flexibility to work between 10-20 hours a week, with a limited amount of these hours in a telecommute status for social media management and graphic design. The internship is unpaid, but offers extensive opportunity for professional experience and portfolio pieces.

The National Defense University’s College of International Security Affairs (CISA) offers students experience working with a diverse student body, including international officers, US military officers and interagency officials. The academic program is supported by a strong Student Services department that manages extracurricular activities, including outreach and engagement, internal communications, special events and travel. Interns will gain valuable communications experience while working for the federal government. Interns will report directly to the Dean of Students.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Social media management (Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn profiles)
Interviews (photos or video of students and VIPs, short feature articles)
Multimedia / Graphics – photography, internal videos, brochure production
Assistance with special events and travel planning
Alumni relations profiles and posts
Feature and news article writing
Special Events preparation
Annual Report production
RequirementsIdeally, the applicant should be majoring in public relations, communications, special events or a related field, or a recent graduate in this field. Because of CISA’s diverse student body and frequent distinguished visitors, this internship requires a mature and professional student who possesses cultural awareness, attention to detail and ability to work well under pressure. Applicants should be adept at using the Microsoft Office Suite, Google Forms and Google Drive, and different social media platforms. Applicants should be comfortable working with a team of professionals in a dynamic, changing environment. Foreign language skills are desired, but not required.
