DescriptionHabitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 with a mission of eliminating poverty housing and homelessness worldwide. To date, Habitat International has built over 500,000 homes and served well over 2 million people. Located in beautiful Buena Vista, Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity was established in 2000, and has built 13 new homes and served 16 families.
One of Colorado’s most desirable summer locations, Buena Vista is surrounded by 14,000 foot peaks and located on the banks of the Arkansas River. A destination for visitors, interns will wake up every day to the beauty of the Arkansas Valley. This is a great opportunity to experience the best of what Colorado has to offer, learn valuable life lessons and skills all while helping to transform one family’s life forever. Travel expenses and housing included and potential school credit and stipend.
ResponsibilitiesThe student intern will be a member of the CCHFH staff and will work directly with the Construction Manager and Construction Team. They will gain hands-on experience by overseeing construction at the build site daily, and have the overall responsibility for the safe execution of all activities each day. They will serve as the primary contact for the project along with the construction manager, and act as a representative for CCHFH to donors, volunteers, and the community. CCHFH is a small primarily volunteer-based organization providing the intern with the opportunity to be creative, successful, and gain on-the-job training that will assist them in their future career search.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Oversee construction at the site each day when volunteers are present.
B. Serve as one of the primary contacts for the project.
C. Assist with material procurement and coordination of subcontractors.
D. Work with the Construction Manager and Volunteer Coordinator to identify and recruit potential crew leaders and other skilled workers.
E. Work with the Construction Manager to prioritize and update construction schedule as needed.
F. Be a contributing member of construction committee during the building of the project.
G. Ensure the safety of volunteers, and that CCHFH’s safety policies are observed at all times, through training as to the proper use of equipment and other safe construction practices.
H. Provide on-the-job training for semi-skilled and unskilled volunteers.
I. Ensure that necessary tools are on site for specific tasks.
J. Maintain a site log for the construction site.
K. Assist with the planning and supervision of other building projects such as home rehabilitations or A Brush with Kindness.
L. Understand and support the mission and vision of CCHFH.
RequirementsA. Hand-on knowledge of residential construction practices.
B. Excellent organizational, communication skills and interpersonal skills.
C. The ability to work with both individuals and large groups.
D. Basic computer skills.
E. Possess leadership skills and high standards of accountability.
F. Ability to meet daily and weekly deadlines.
G. CPR/First Aid training
H. Successfully completes a background investigation to perform duties as required.
