This position is concerned with advocacy and academic assistance to latino students throughout TUSD. The Mexican American Student Service Department runs Saturday Math centers as well as free after school tutoring at all of our MASSD schools. Services are provided Monday-Friday from 7:30am-3:30 pm and Saturdays from 10am-2pm. There are opportunities for student services every day of the week, in most TUSD schools. Tutoring and mentorship are provided throughout the school year. Recuriting of volunteers is another large facet of this work.
Intern would work alongside both Mentor Specialist, and Academic specialist to carry out vision of improving academic standing of Latino students in TUSD. A major role in our department is to provide tutoring in all subjects with an emphasis on Mathmatics. Provide in-class support to struggling students. Provide familial support by reaching out to families by phone. Provide tutoring on campus after school, and/or in the Saturday Math centers. Assist Mentor specialist with community volunteer recruitment.
Qualified applicants will have a High School Diploma and pass a TUSD background/fingerprint check at the cost of the District. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus, but not necessary. Strong passion for empowering and educating the Latino Community in Tucson, and providing supports and guidance to students and families to achieve academic success.
