Description

The Learning Zone is an after-school mentoring program that assists families by providing their children with the support they need to succeed in school and life. Program activities are designed to develop students’ academic, spiritual, social, physical, creative and emotional potential. Daily tutoring in age-appropriate school subjects, computer skills development, American history and Biblically-based life lessons in areas such as hygiene, clean & healthy eating and etiquette are just a few key program components. Field trips, family events and other special gatherings throughout the school year make the Learning Zone a fun, community-building endeavor.

For the 2014-15 school year, the Learning Zone will be serving 1st grade through 8th grade students.
Each subsequent year, the program will expand to include another grade level. In 2015-16, 1st grade through 9th grade will be served.

By 2018, the Learning Zone will be able to accommodate grades 1 though 12, allowing participating students to continue in the program until they graduate from high school.

The Learning Zone is a S.A.Y. YES! Center for Youth Development. The S.A.Y. YES! program began in Los Angeles in 1992 and has grown to over 200 centers serving approximately 5,000 kids nationally.

The Learning Zone is sponsored by the Westside Vineyard Christian Fellowship. All who serve in the program have completed a training process and full background check.

At The Learning Zone, kids have a place to truly call their own!

Many kids today are significantly behind in reading, language and math. And frequently, there are simple things lacking which most people take for granted – an after school snack, a parent at home, and safe areas to play in.

The Learning Zone after-school program is an answer to Jesus’ call to “Let the little children come to Me” (Luke 18:16). Our vision is to start with elementary age children with the goal of mentoring those children all the way through high school. As a holistic ministry, we partner with parents to meet academic, social, spiritual and emotional needs with the primary goal of seeing each child reach their potential by building a strong spiritual and character foundation.

A mentorship volunteer is someone willing to devote their time to the mentoring of local youth on the Westside of LA 1-3 days a week (The Learning Zone meets after school Tues-Thurs) for a total of 4-10 hours every week. They should be proficient in elementary and middle school schoolwork of various subjects and willing to develop friendships with students. They should also be willing to lead enrichment subjects for 15-30 minutes at a time, including, but not limited to, computers, art, interactive Bible lessons, American history, science, chess, cooking, health and math enrichment. The Learning Zone is very open to new ideas based on your personal skills set, and we welcome all proposals!

Responsibilities

A mentorship volunteer is someone willing to devote their time to the mentoring of local youth on the Westside of LA 1-3 days a week (The Learning Zone meets after school Tues-Thurs) for a total of 4-10 hours every week. They need to be ready to fully interact with students from the moment they arrive. During Welcome Zones, they should be ready to play a board game or LEGOs; for snack time, they need to make sure they wash their hands and possibly assist in preparing the snack; during enrichment time, they need to be ready to lead a lesson or engage in the activities with the students; they need to be ready to help a group of students during homework time, or assist a "focus child" one-on-one. Once one group has completed their work, they need to be ready to move to another, or to a Bonus Zone, for some chess, computers, art or something completely new. They need to be proficient in elementary and middle school schoolwork of various subjects and willing to develop friendships with students. They need to be willing to lead enrichment subjects for 15-30 minutes at a time, including, but not limited to, computers, art, interactive Bible lessons, American history, science, chess, cooking, health and math enrichment. The Learning Zone is very open to new ideas based on your personal skills set, and we welcome all proposals!
