DescriptionStoneview Elementary School is a Title I school in the Dekalb County School District in Lithonia GA. It is also listed as a focus school which means many students need more assistance in reading and math to stay on grade level. This position is to give experience to individuals that are interested not only in teaching but to teach specifically in Title I institutions. It is also open to students in social work, psychology, family consumer science and human development courses. You will be able to attain great experience and advice on how to teach in a Title I school and develop an understanding of academic institutions in low income communities that most do not have. You will gain an advantage on good behavior management skills, networking with staff from the Dekalb county district that allow for referencing once the internship is completed.
Individuals absolutely must have a passion for learning, teaching and wanted to see nothing for the best for our scholars. Having knowledge and/or experience in Title I schools, community organizing or low income communities is a plus.
This is an unpaid internship but individuals in need of college credit will be able to do so through this internship.
ResponsibilitiesYou will be assigned to a classroom teacher and will be instructed on what and how to conduct each lesson every week. Interns are to assist with carrying out classroom assignments, test assessments, event planning and any other necessity need by the instructor.
Part- Time Interns are from 11am-2pm M-F
Full- Time Internships are from 8:30am-2pm M-F
- Must be at least 18
- Hold at least a 2.7 GPA
- Have experience with children (particularly in low income communities)
- Have basic reading and math skills
- Have knowledge of Microsoft Word & Power Point
- Be well spoken
- Great organizational & communication skills
- Ability to problem solve effectively
- Have a great passion for student progression
