DescriptionInspired by the Reggio-Emilia Approach and the Montessori Method, tinyHappy Garden International School is small, home-based English immersion preschool located in Yokohama, Japan. We have students from Japan as well as expats from around the world and we are always looking for bright, energetic, and caring individuals who are passionate about Early Childhood Education to join our teaching team!
At tinyHappy Garden, we believe that play is the most important work of the child. Our students are free to explore our seasonal themes each month through creative materials made by our teachers, who set up invitations to play. Subjects such as maths, science, language, sensorial and practical life skills may be learned through use of Montessori materials placed on low, open shelves. Children enjoy our daily Music and Motion and Circle Time under the large tree in our classroom.
Currently, we have 14 students in total aged 18 months ~ 3.5 years old. As our students grow and can better express their interests, teachers look forward to transitioning to a more emergent curriculum, even though we have already completed many thematic projects since the school opened in 2014.
Because the school is located in a house, there is an extra room on the second floor which we would like to offer to our intern as well as high-speed Wi-fi internet connection. Utilities (gas, water, electricity consumption, and internet) will be covered by the school as well as a monthly stipend paid in cash at the end of each month.
Interns who stay with us can study Japanese (there is a group that offers Japanese lessons for any ability level for 300 yen/month), learn how to cook a few Japanese meals, and learn more about the Montessori and Reggio-Emilia teaching methods and early childhood education in general. You may do anything you like in your time off. The school is located close to local transport (bus, train), so it is easy to get around the city for day trips. If you do a little research about the area before arriving, you will find that there is so much to see and enjoy. We are not in Yokohama City central, and not in Tokyo Central, either, but approximately a 30-minute train ride away. It is recommended that you install the application Line on your smartphone as well as bringing a pocket-wi-fi and plug transformer/adaptor with you.
Please have a look at our website to find out more about what we do here at school. If you are passionate about working with young children and look forward to a challenge of living in a foreign country, please contact us to set up a time to Skype. We are hoping to find a teacher to start as early as January 2017.
We look forward to meeting you! See you at school!
ResponsibilitiesDaily responsibilities will include:
~ assisting teachers with daily activities (including working and playing with all children during the work cycles, setting up art projects, reading books to children, singing and dancing, helping children use the bathroom, playing together at the park, setting the lunch table, helping children take a rest after lunch, etc.)
~ taking photos of all the children throughout the day
~ helping to prepare educational resources for the children to use in the classroom
~ assisting with planning and prep for thematic activities
~ attending all excursions
~ taking notes about the progress of each child (documentation)
~ maintaining a safe learning environment
~ speaking with parents about the progress of their child
~ assisting with managing our social media platforms
RequirementsWe want to hire someone who understands that this position is a very serious commitment:
1) to our family and co-teachers - so that we may be able to offer this great space of learning and earn a living,
2) to the students you will be caring for who can become attached to you, and
3) their families who are entrusting you with their treasures.
This is not babysitting, rather educating, and many people will be depending on us. Therefore, we need someone who is responsible, respectful, self-sufficient, energetic and curious with a bright personality who adores children and above all can be committed for the time they promise to be with us. Please understand that since this position involves childcare, we ask our potential interns to have completed coursework in the ECE field, provide at least two references and talk with us over Skype.
