DescriptionSweetwater Farm is a non-profit, community-supported urban organic farm and educational center located in the Town n' Country area of Tampa (just northwest of TIA). Through our hands-on programs, visitors of all ages practice appropriate land stewardship and master sustainable agriculture techniques.
Sweetwater is offering 6-8 internships in our Educational Program as "Field Trip Guides" from September 2016 through May 2017 (training in August/September). Field Trip Guides will learn to lead 2.5 hour field trips with groups of school-aged children. Interns will be exposed to working with a range of grades levels and techniques associated with teaching the various learning levels. Topics will include composting, seeding, greenhouse growing, water treatment, pest control, planting and harvesting. Sweetwater will provide hands-on farming and field trip program training.
This is a wonderful opportunity for teacher-students to make a connection between the ecological, social and economical importance of sustainable agriculture. Interns must be available on at least two of the following days every week: Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri, and Sat. (Field trips normally run from 10-12:30 but are occasionally pushed later in the day.) Interns will come each week, on days when there are no field trips interns will help with garden projects to further there hands-on knowledge of what they are teaching to visiting groups. These are tasks around the farm such as maintenance of the green house, herb garden, etc. This is a non-paid position, however a share of organic produce from the farm will be provided for every two field trips. Education, Biology, or Environmental Sustainability majors are encouraged to apply.
