North Shore Animal League America is the largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization in the world. We are a non-profit organization and since 1944, the League's mission has been saving the lives of pets through adoption, rescue and advocacy initiatives. Every year, the League reaches across the country to rescue, nurture and adopt nearly 20,000 pets into happy and loving homes. Over the years, the League has placed close to 1 million puppies, kittens, cats and dogs into carefully screened homes. North Shore Animal League America seeks an under-graduate or graduate intern majoring in education to assist with our Mutt-i-grees off-site programs. The ideal intern will have a passion for animals and teaching. He or she will gain a working knowledge of our social/emotional curriculum bridged with humane education, and our non-profit operations. The intern will be an integral part of our newest mission: To Educate.
The intern will be based out of Port Washington, NY, where he or she will travel to New York City to implement Mutt-i-grees Programs, which include: Student Assemblies at schools, Reading with Mutt-i-grees in libraries, working with families in student homeless shelters.
The internship includes driving to various sites that have been scheduled, to work with students and educators on the SEL curriculum, via pet rescue. Travel includes bringing a puppy or small dog on-site to be part of the work. The programs always involves two people for implementation. The intern will go through training, so that they are knowledgeable in both North Shore Animal League America and the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum. Training will also include observation of North Shore Mutt-i-grees staff on-site, before going out on their own. Follow-up back to the Mutt-igrees Team will be required, with a recap of the experience.
Method of Supervision
The intern will report to and receive direct supervision from the program director. The intern will have a workstation in the Port Washington office, day-to-day training, and performance reviews.
Desired Student Outcomes

The intern will gain an understanding of non-profit management, the Mutt-i-greees Curriculum and programming, animal rescue - the full scope of the Animal League’s mission to Rescue, Nurture, Adopt, and Educate.
