Description

The Marion Downs Center’s Read, Imagine, Share, Explore (“RISE”) program, is an early literacy program seeking college interns in the field of education or speech-language hearing sciences. The Marion Downs Center (MDC) is a "Center of Excellence" for hearing, speech and language. The Marion Downs Center is recognized worldwide for its leadership, progressive innovations and innovative clinical service. Its mission to value and promote individual and family choice in treatment, technology and communication options for individuals with hearing loss and communication disorders is unique. MDC believes in approaching care with a holistic approach, serving the individual and the family.
The mission of RISE is to build and support community-wide literacy by equipping preschoolers and their families with the fundamental tools used to develop English vocabulary, the ability to read and write, and the capacity to think creatively. RISE highlights the importance of ensuring all preschoolers with a strong support for children’s language and early literacy development. Each week’s activities radiate from a story, read at the beginning of the class. Art, music, and movement follow, developing children’s self-confidence as well as their speech, language, and fine and gross motor skills along the way. RISE has been providing community-wide literacy to low-income preschoolers and their families for the past 21 years. The MDC partners with collaborating community organizations by bringing the program into the housing complexes where participating families live.
We require that all our interns commit to volunteering with us for a minimum of a year and pass a background check. The kids we serve have not had a lot of inconsistency in their lives, so we strive to provide stability for them in our RISE classroom.
