San Jose Jazz: Progressions After-School Coordinator

Are you a community member who is passionate about providing transformative life experiences for at-risk youth? Do you believe that every child deserves access to high quality after-school and weekend music education and to be part of a learning community that sets the bar high, regardless of ability to pay? If the answer is YES, you may apply to join the San Jose Jazz Progressions team for the 2015-16 academic year. We are a committed group of musicians, educators and social activists with a steadfast commitment to Progressions, an after-school and weekend youth development program that uses music to connect with low-income, at-risk kids in East San Jose. Our mission? To keep participants in school, out of gangs, and on the road to becoming positive contributing members of our community.

We seek an after-school coordinator for the 2015-16 school year. This person should be comfortable working with diverse young children and have an ability to effectively manage groups.


Roles and Responsibilities:

Supervise students during snack, homework, learning lab and recreation time
Provide one-on-one homework and emotional support to students as needed
Develop and implement creative ideas for use of recreation time
Ensure the smooth flow of all aspects of daily programming
Address student discipline issues proactively by implementing a clear classroom management strategy that holds kids accountable for their actions while offering multiple opportunities to feel successful and valued
Track attendance and discipline issues and notify Sites Manager when problems arise
Maintain strong student/parent relationships and assist Sites Manager with implementation of a parent engagement strategy

Work Hours

Approximately 20 hours per week during the school year (4-5 days per week, exact schedule TBD)
Possible role with Progressions Summer Music Camp
Start Date: June or August 2015



Experience supervising elementary students
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student populations
Punctual and self-directed
Strong commitment to social justice
Strong interpersonal skills and a patient demeanor
Willingness to work collaboratively with others
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
