Description

Teacher aides provide support for full-time teachers, helping them with clerical work and classroom activities. This can involve providing individual attention to students in need of extra assistance or monitoring students while the teacher is out. A teacher's aide's job is to assist a teacher and reinforce the instruction taught in the classroom to students. This can include going over lessons with students individually, answering questions or grading assignments. A teacher's aide may be asked to supervise the students outside of the classroom. When class is not in session, a teacher's aide might assist by entering grades or typing up class summaries. A teacher's aide may also organize the classroom and put supplies in order.

Responsibilities

• Assist lead teachers in planning, designing and implementing curriculum
• Provide assistance in preparing lesson plans
• Impart classroom instruction in accordance to lesson plans
• Supervise and control students during class and when the lead teacher is not present
• Assist students with carrying out classroom activities
• Assist students during lunch time
• Observe students for developmental issues and communicate findings to lead teachers
• Implement age appropriate activities and monitor safety throughout
• Research information for lesson development
• Communicate progress and observations to parents
• Maintain student records and perform other clerical tasks
• Help in maintaining a clean and organized classroom
• Maintain appropriate classroom discipline and decorum

Requirements

Teacher's aides must like to work with children, as this is a primary function. In addition, they must be willing and able to supervise children in the classroom which might involve special training on anti-bullying and other programs. Teacher's aides need to be good communicators. Aides must also enjoy teaching to ensure the concepts of the curriculum are conveyed during one-on-one student sessions. Teaching aides also need patience. They often work with students who require more focused attention and lessons to grasp the material covered in class.
