DescriptionThe mission of the Urban Math Readiness Corps (UMaRC) is to identify, recruit, and develop STEM-major college students in the New Jersey area. Corps members will tutor and mentor students with math and science deficiencies, as well as develop students' interests in math and science. In addition, they will provide support inside and outside the classroom to People's Prep math and science teachers.Corps members will also apply knowledge and skill sets to partner with People's Prep staff as agents of social justice by helping break cycles of unequal education, inadequate opportunity, and poverty.
We do this by: Providing professional development and support from People's Prep teachers and School Leaders. People's Prep will also provide opportunities for corps members to network with school partners throughout Newark.
Program Overview: The Urban Math Readiness Corps (UMaRC) is a new, semester-long or summer internship for STEM-major college students. Corps members will work with People’s Prep teachers and students to enrich students’ academic experiences in STEM-related classes. To maximize their impact, UMaRC members commit six hours a week during the semester or full-time hours during the summer.
As a member of UMaRC, corps members will work in academic rotations. Corps members will spend four weeks working in each rotation. Descriptions of rotations are listed below. Upon completion of all four rotations, corps members will be required to teach a lesson in a math class with teacher supervision.
Harbor: Launched in 2015, the Harbor is a school-based, small classroom setting for students who need a more restrictive environment to learn how to stabilize and regulate behavior, and employ coping mechanisms in order to succeed academically and socially. Throughout the day, students work in small groups or individually with teachers and counselors. All students in the Harbor receive instruction in each core content area, including all courses in the math and science departments.
Classrooms: Corps members may support specific math or science teachers throughout the day or may work with individual or small groups of students in both their math and science classes. In either case, corps members will gain an intimate working knowledge of the courses’ learning objectives, teachers’ pedagogical decisions, and students’ remedial or enrichment needs in math and science classes.
Council Tutoring: This year, upperclassmen have ACT and SAT prep in their Councils, which is People’s Prep’s single-sex, daily, advisory program. In Council, students will work on a self-paced program under the supervision and guidance of their advisors three days a week. Two advising periods a week will be set aside for direct instruction. Whether during self-guided or direct test prep instruction, corps members will play a pivotal role in preparing students for these critical college entrance exams.
Calc Kids: This year, we’ve partnered with Bard High School Early College to provide People’s Prep students with the opportunity to take college-level math courses. This arrangement, open to select People’s Prep students, is designed to keep our academically accelerated students as motivated and competitive as college applicants.
All candidates wishing to apply to UMaRC must have the following qualifications:
Current college sophomores and juniors preferred; college freshman or seniors, and recent college graduates may apply
Pursing a BA or BS in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) field required
Strong academic record in STEM coursework
Interest in urban education and social justice
Eligible to work in the United States
Official school transcript
Firm commitment to and belief in the People’s Prep’s mission
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in communicating with diverse audiences
Demonstrated ability to multitask effectively and prioritize strategically
Openness to feedback and willingness to take personal responsibility
