DescriptionSupervisor: Cody Herron, Naturalist Ranger
Purpose: To assist the Naturalist Ranger in necessary duties
Hours and duration of internship: As assigned by University requirements
Brief position summary: The Wildlife and Fisheries Management Intern will act in an ‘assistant’ role
to the Naturalist Ranger Team
Performs some daily maintenance jobs throughout the park.
Assists with the maintenance and restoration of native wildlife habitat areas within the park
and Lucius Burch Natural Area.
Assists with the maintenance of the designated grassland areas found within the park.
Assists with the mapping and maintenance of unpaved trails in the park.
Assists with the maintenance and expansion of the Shelby Farms Arboretum.
Assists with the maintenance of all lakes at Shelby Farms, performing water quality test,
creating fish structure and allowing the lakes to be more easily accessible by fisherman.
Assist with the inventory of white-tailed deer at Shelby Farms.
Assist with outdoor education programs and with leading school groups and other groups
on educational nature hikes.
Flexible in work schedule to work weekends, some holidays and evening shifts.
Performs related tasks as required.
RequirementsRequirements and Qualifications:
Course work in Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Wildlife Biology, or a related field such
as Natural Resources, Environmental Science or Botany.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Ability to perform strenuous physical labor in an outdoor setting.
Good public speaking skills, strong communication skills and the ability to participate as
a team member.
Some knowledge of native plants and wildlife found in Tennessee.
Some knowledge of how to operate and maintain equipment such as tractors,
bushhoggs, zero turn mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws and leaf blowers.
