Brittany Berger is the Public Relations Specialist at eZanga.com. She writes for and manages the company’s blog about online marketing tips, manages the company’s social media profiles, and helps with more traditional marketing and public relations efforts. She graduated from the University of Delaware in May 2012 after studying Mass Communication and Interactive Media.

1. How did you get started in the industry? How can someone who is interested in your work get started?

I actually got started in marketing/PR by joining my school’s chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). I’ve always loved blogging and social media, so while looking for internships I was immediately drawn to the internship at eZanga, which involved blogging about social media! After my internship, I worked here part-time during my senior year at the University of Delaware, during which time I began getting involved in other activities beyond writing for the blog. After graduation, I moved up to full-time.

If you’re interested in public relations or social media, look for organizations you can get involved in. The great thing is that all organizations on your campus probably have a position where you can dive in and get experience. Most clubs will have a position for publicity or maintaining a social media presence. As for learning how to do all of that, the resources available online are astonishing, and more and more schools are developing classes around social media marketing. I highly recommend participating in industry-related Twitter chats and reading as many online publications as possible.

2. What’s the future of your industry or job?

The online advertising industry is continuing to grow rapidly. In fact, several sources predict that 2013 will be the first year that online ad spend is going to overtake that of newspaper advertising. Online advertising is becoming more and more commonplace, so expect more competition, especially with mobile advertising.

As for social media marketing, content strategy is huge right now. Brands are moving beyond just having a presence on Facebook or Twitter and towards actually getting something out of that presence. Unfortunately, a lot of companies are still lost on how to actually go about that.

3. What do you look for when you hire an intern or entry-level candidate?

When looking for an intern, we value enthusiasm and passion as much as experience. We’ve had interns that had a lot of experience, but didn’t care enough to put what they had learned into the work they were doing. But if an intern is less experienced and more passionate about the internship, they’ll make the effort to learn what they need to as quickly as possible.

4. What is one thing an intern can do to make a favorable impression?

Research, research, research! So many interns go into an interview knowing next to nothing about the company, or knowing only what’s on the ‘About’ page of the company’s website. Look through the company’s entire website, blog, and social media profiles. Look for press releases or news articles about them or their clients. Show them you have a genuine interest in the company and aren’t interested in just any internship you can get.

5. Can you share a positive intern story and an intern horror story? No names needed…

We recently had an intern that had to work under a lot of pressure to meet a quick deadline and took the challenge head on. You could easily see how passionate he was about his work. He took feedback well, which is a trait not all interns have, and was responsive to learn new things and make changes quickly.

Of course, not all of our experiences with interns were that great. There was one intern that was clearly only here to pad their resume. They rushed through work, and sometimes just didn’t show up or do the work at all. They were also caught in a lie a few times.
