Today’s five employer questions are directed at Sponzu.com, a new “crowdfunding” website that lets users contribute money toward proposed charitable projects just by viewing ads. They’re currently looking for an intern on Internships.com to act as their social media assistant.
1. What do you look for when you hire an intern?
Being a startup, it is crucial to surround ourselves with people who understand and believe in our concept. The role of the social media assistant is a very important one, and ultimately this person will be responsible for spreading our message across the multitude of media channels and building the following without which Sponzu will never succeed. Keeping this in mind, the ideal candidate will be a cooperative team player and a self-driven individual who is not afraid to voice opinions and take initiatives as long as they are aligned with the company’s goals. We are definitely not interested in someone who will sit and wait for instructions to be given. We look for creativity and determination.
2. How did you get started in the industry? How can I get started?
I have dedicated over 10 years to building a successful corporate career as a project manager and later a COO of a technology service provider. In early 2009, I took a leap of faith and founded FinCode Solutions, a boutique software and web application development firm. After two years of developing exciting platforms for technology startups, I decided it was time to take on a new challenge. I came across a couple of crowdfunding platforms and was impressed with the simplicity of the concepts, so we got together with my partners and founded Sponzu.com, a social fundraising platform with a twist.
3. What is the future of your industry?
Social fundraising is becoming a buzzword within the social and entrepreneurial communities. The growing trend drives many new platforms and ways to raise money from people’s donations. At the same time, video advertising is set to grow with highest gains in market share over the next three years, reaching over 11 percent of all online advertising by 2014. In other words, the future of this industry is bright and there are many opportunities for success.
4. What is one main thing an intern can do to make a favorable impression? To make a negative impression?
Exhibiting understanding and genuine interest in our company will certainly make a favorable impression. At the very least, I want to know that the candidate took their five minutes to Google Sponzu.com and see what we actually do. The biggest turnoff are generic cover letters that clearly tell me that the person does not really care where he or she is going.
5. Why should interns join Sponzu.com?
Sponzu.com is a startup with a unique approach to fundraising and advertising. This poses many obstacles but at the same time creates endless opportunities for learning, growth, and ultimate success. We are also a social enterprise with a mission to help people. As I have personally experienced over the past few months, helping others is a huge motivator to moving forward and working hard.
