5 Questions. 5 Minutes. 1 Employer. Brook from Nestle Purina.
Nestle Purina PetCare Company is “passionately committed to making pets’ lives better.” While “pet lover” may not be an absolute requirement, it certainly would be amazing to work with a company who loves your pet just as much as you do! They offer great internships and training opportunities in almost every field you could think of (Brook started as an intern, BTW!).
1. What do you look for when you hire an intern?
As we have over 40 positions this year, this depends largely on the internship or entry-level position. Typically our internships focus on college juniors and our full-time entry level opportunities focus on college seniors. The majors we are seeking include: Business, Marketing, Communications, Engineering, Food Science, Animal Science, Engineering Technology, HR,Computer Science, MIS, Accounting, Finance and Biology/Microbiology. We are recruiting individuals into positions in the following functional areas: HR, IS/IT, Production, Quality Assurance, Engineering, Accounting, Supply Chain, Marketing, Audit, Customer Service, Sales and Veterinary Sales.
2. How did you get started in the industry? How can I get started?
I got started with Nestle Purina through my internship in HR. I was offered a full-time position based on my performance. I have now been with the company for 8 years and have moved into a management role. Many of our internship programs can lead to full-time offers depending on market demands and intern performance. Internships and entry-level positions are an excellent way to get your foot in the door with a large organization and demonstrate you knowledge and skills!
3. What is the future of your industry?
The pet care industry has been very stable throughout the shifts in the market over the last few years. In the future our industry is going to be impacted by technology and the growing demands of our consumers.
4. What is one main thing an intern can do to make a favorable impression? To make a negative impression?
Listen and show initiative! Internships are great opportunities to learn about the “real world.’ We all learn about techniques and approaches in our given functional areas during college. However, your internship is an opportunity to learn from people that are experts in their fields and industries. Absorb as much as possible, ask questions, and demonstrate a desire to present great work!
Also, be very open to feedback. Our goal is to provide developmental experience for interns and help prepare them for their careers. As such, it is important to listen to constructive criticism and acknowledge the efforts of others in mentoring you while interning. I know the feedback I received as an intern still impacts my approaches as a manager today and helped me in my professional development.
5. Give us a positive intern story? An intern horror story?
Being in HR for over 8 years I can tell you that I love walking the halls at Nestle Purina and seeing associates that interned with us and have moved into full-time and management roles. It demonstrates the value of our intern programs and their ability to bring top talent into our organization. It also confirms the quality of our culture at Nestle Purina in that once someone experiences the positive environment that we get to work in they tend to stay with us for years or the length of their careers.
Our goal is to make sure our interns have very positive experiences at NPPC. A silly intern story: One of marketing interns who sat on the 13th floor sent an email out to her brand team introducing herself and welcomed them to visit her in her office on the 19th floor. The funny part of the story is that there are only 15 floors in the building Her brand team had fun with this throughout her internship. We enjoy having a great time as a team at work!
Thanks Brook! Don’t forget to check out some of the great opportunities with Nestle Purina.
