The big story in social media + intern land this weekend was how the Marc Jacobs intern went all “Dear Diary…” on the company Twitter account.
Hate is a strong word – but I think it might be safe to say that this intern hates his “tyrant” CEO.
Thoughts that ran through my mind after seeing this:
-The tweets were posted at midnight on a Friday… I smell booze.
-”My last day is tomorrow.” They work on Saturdays?
-”I’m alone in this office…” It’s midnight on a Friday. Go home.
-”See ya! Don’t want to be ya!” I believe the phrase is “Wouldn’t wanna be ya!”
And then, I really started to think about it. How horrible was this internship that the intern would willingly, and so publicly, jeopardize their future career opportunities?
The so-obvious lesson: Be nice to your intern, or they might tell all of the people who love your company how terrible you are. And you better hope they don’t have a spiteful personality when you start working for them one day.
BUT THEN, I REALLY started to think about it. Is this intern a genius? The story is that MJ is currently searching for a new person to manage the Twitter account, and the tyrant hasn’t been impressed, at all, with the applicants presented by the current-Twitter-access-intern. So what does he do? Goes all out about how the applicants so far are no bueno AND criticizes the boss for being so bossy. But, this is the fashion world. And, this is Marc Jacobs. People thrive on this kind of drama. The genius part? MJ probably now has a ton of qualified and very eager people saying “pick me, I’ll do a WAY better job than that other sleazeball intern did!”
Or not. Maybe it really was an awful place to be, and the intern just was not enjoying their duties. What do you think?

Wow, regardless of the situation you should never ruin your image in that way. Especially in the fashion industry, which is a small one, your bound to run into someone who heard you acted in this way. Hurts your future job opportunities.

This intern probably went into this internship excited, ready to impress and Marc Jacobs was more then likely an idol for her. When being treated so badly, it probably would turn you into a spiteful person. I've been an intern 4 times now and have never been treated particularly well, it can really play with your head as a person. Myself and my friends who have interned have all been made to work weekends and stay till 4am, weve all been made to run out and get the designer some new socks or plants because his have died and weve all been living on tinned soup and a blow up bed. The fashion industry is horrible, and being a human being should come before your 'fashion repuation' interns have given up their free time and a lot of money to help you out, it's really not hard to show a bit of gratitude. I don't blame her for the tweets, she had obviously had enough of being treated so badly.
