Charles Schwab is a financial services firm that is widely recognized as a great place to work. The quality of their employees and candidates owes some credit to a robust, well thought out talent acquisition strategy. Their recruiters, known as “Schwab talent advisors”, are opening up and sharing their advice for job and internship seekers.
Shannon Grimes is someone you want to go to for job and internship search advice. As a talent attraction manager for Schwab, she attends up to five career events every week! At these events, she and other Schwab talent advisors focus on connecting with job seekers. With this in mind, they’ve started the Snag Your Dream Job blog series to share their “knowledge and perspective on how job candidates can make themselves stand out from the crowd, practical advice that is relevant across any industry, role or rank.”
The first post of the series focuses on tips to work a job fair, which can be applied to your own campus career and internship fairs. Broken down into three categories, the 10 tips explain how you can prepare, maximize and activate any event. Read A Recruiter’s Top 10 Tips to Work a Job Fair.
“… 50 percent of today’s job opportunities are unadvertised, or “hidden.” How do you get one of these jobs? Talk to people.”
In the second post, the importance of networking is highlighted with this statistic: about 50 percent of today’s job opportunities are unadvertised, or “hidden.” How do you get one of these jobs? Talk to people, Grimes says. Connecting with people and building your network is an important element when searching for a job or an internship. Technology has changed the job search process but it still is not strong enough to replace personal connections between a job seeker and potential employer.
Among others, Schwab’s very own VP of Talent Acquisition, Frank Hynes, shares networking advice on how to make a great first impression by asking the right questions and preparing for events that may come your way. Read Schwabbies’ Networking Tips That Work.
The Charles Schwab blog will continue the Snag Your Dream Job series through the fall. Check back soon for the next post!
