Our fourth post from the interns at Sparkpr! Diane talks about good memories, changing direction and what lies ahead for her career.
Today is my last day as an intern.
It’s been an interesting journey and I am going to miss all the great folks at Sparkpr. The amazing thing about internships is they open your eyes to the real world of your future career. Post-grad, you’re so focused on student loans and this degree you just spent thousands of dollars on — you scramble to make sure you put it to use. Sure, people tell you its fine to not know exactly what you want to do with your life, but you don’t care if its fine with them … it’s not fine with you! I’ve realized the most important thing for me is the love: career, life, personal. Now it’s time to step back and allow myself to find it.
As I wrap up my internship, I realize another one will most likely be my next move. I’m not sure public relations is right for me, and I was lucky enough to figure that out working with the best in the industry at Sparkpr. Don’t get me wrong; I love PR, but I wonder if there is another field I maybe better suited for. As I sort through countless online job boards I’m excited about the new chapter I will start.
So what did I learn in the last 3 months?
- There’s a whole heck of a lot of other work that goes into public relations. It’s not all media relations.
- No day will ever be the same.
- It’s PR, not ER. (Even though it seems like “the sky may be falling” at times, always keep your cool, and don’t let it get to you.)
Who knows? Maybe I’ll be writing from another internship soon …
Good luck to all my fellow interns at Spark and everywhere else. I hope you find what you’re looking for.
