By Nick Gidwani

The fall semester is winding down and students all over the country are busy burning the midnight oil, finishing final projects and papers or cramming for final exams. The semester had passed by at a frantic pace and once it is all over and the dust has settled you will have the time to think about something else besides schoolwork.

One thing that may be on the forefront of many people’s minds is planning for a summer internship. At this point in the year, very well prepared students who know what they want to do are way ahead of the curve and have locked up their summer internship with a leading investment bank, trending consumer brand, or government agency. Meanwhile, the vast majority of under- and middle-classman may be struggling to chose a major let alone, figure out which industry or job to intern in.

Worry not, an internship is the perfect chance to try out different industries and job roles. The great news is that although the fall semester has almost come and gone, there are plenty of internship positions that have gone unfilled and are waiting for you.

Get a jump on some of your fellow classmates and hone “hard” skills to give you that edge that will make you stand out from the rest. The following 3 skills are currently in high demand:

1. Excel

Excel is Microsoft’s classic spreadsheet application and can be used to store, manipulate, and analyze large amounts of data. It is a great skill set to have and has applications in almost any business setting, from statistics to accounting and finance. If you have advanced Excel skills it can benefit you in most any job where numbers play a role.

2. Content Marketing

When the Internet was in its infancy, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) specialists were able to game the search engines by using a very formulaic approach to webpage development, tricking Google into letting it rank #1, but the content was often irrelevant. However, in the past year or so all that has changed. Google made some major changes to its search algorithms and now quality content is the new rage in Internet Marketing. What does that mean? It means that web content needs to be written for a specific target audience, and written well so it engaging to that type of reader or buyer. Content marketing is also about creating interactive content like video and making it sharable. If you are interested in Social Media and Marketing, understanding content marketing is crucial.

3. Interaction Design

Interaction design (IxD), also known and User Experience Design (UXD), is all about designing for the digital world. However, rather than focusing on form it focuses on user behavior. Interaction design incorporates graphic design and web design with psychology. It is an emerging field that is scooping up more and more attention by the day, as computers and the Internet are becoming an important part of our lives. The applications that people use need to be created in a way that is easy and intuitive, and in business situations may encourage purchasing. Knowing the fundamentals of Interaction Design, can help you land a job in product design at gaming, technology, and internet companies.

The aforementioned skills are really just the tip of iceberg and there are a ton of “hard” skill areas that are in demand by employers. To find out more valued skills, you will need to get out and do some research on your own. Talk to your professors, university career services and get some first-hand insight. There is also a ton of information online, including free courses at your disposal.

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and build that knowledge and expertise in to round out your resume and get that summer internship!

By Lindsay Traiman

As most students know, completing an internship during college is a great way to develop skills, build your resume, and explore new industries. Internships, however, can also help you with the job search if you know how to leverage them properly. Whether you are interning right now, have plans to intern this spring, or are looking for a summer position, the following tips will help you use your internship in preparation for the job search.

1. Write down everything you do.

As an intern, make a point of logging all the projects you complete or assist with. After your internship is over, you will want to be able to discuss the specifics of your position in an interview or at a career fair. It is important to know exactly how you added value to the company. You may also learn terms or concepts that you can use later to demonstrate your industry-specific knowledge. Showing an understanding of the industry landscape will make a positive impression during interviews.

2. Update your resume during your internship.

Not only are your tasks fresh in your mind while you’re on the job, but you can ask your supervisor to review your resume for you. He or she will likely be able to improve the language you use in each bullet point and may even provide you with a list of intern duties that you can use. Have several people within the company look your resume over to receive as much feedback as possible.

3. Practice networking

For every interaction you have as an intern, treat it as an opportunity to make a connection. Whether that means attending an industry event hosted by your company or simply meeting a new employee, you have the chance to become a more confident networker with every conversation you have. Exchange information with people you would like to stay in touch with, and add them on LinkedIn. Continue to stay in touch, and you never know what career opportunities may arise for you.

4. Conduct informational interviews.

Arrange to interview people in divisions you would like to learn more about, and prepare a list of questions beforehand. Use these opportunities to find out about different career opportunities, and stay in touch with the people you interview. Not only does this make a good impression at your internship, but it will help you consider jobs you hadn’t thought of before. It can also be a way to learn more about that particular industry.

5. Strengthen your weaknesses.

You probably know some of your weaknesses, and you can also ask for feedback from your supervisor. Once aware of what you need to improve upon, make sure you do just that. Use your internship as a chance to strengthen skills that need work. Not only will you develop a more well-rounded skill set, but you can use this as an interview talking point to show that you are capable of self-assessment and improvement.

Your internship is not just a way to build your resume, but an opportunity for career growth. It is an experience that can make you a more confident interviewee, networker, and future employee. If you play your cards right, you can open doors for yourself that will last long after your internship is over.

I spent my summer interning for Ashoka in Washington, DC. Ashoka is a network of social entrepreneurs (known as Ashoka Fellows) who are out to fix some of the world’s toughest problems—people like Wendy Kopp of Teach for America or Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia. Ashoka finds and supports these entrepreneurs to help them spread their ideas across the globe.

I had a great experience at Ashoka, and I know the things I learned there will be applicable in my future whether I decide to stay in the nonprofit sector or try my hand and the corporate world. In case any of you are on the fence about a nonprofit internship, here are five lessons I learned.

1. Nonprofits are looking for hard skills

“It’s not enough that you want to ‘help people’… you must obtain the specific skills that will help propel that change forward.”

After interning with Ashoka this summer, I learned that nonprofits have a desperate need for hard skills—skills like finance, accounting, photography, writing, web programming, and videography. It’s not enough that you want to “help people” and you “hope to change the world;” you must obtain the specific skills that will help propel that change forward. Hard skills are just as crucial in the nonprofit sector as in the corporate or for-profit world.

2. Nonprofits are the best place for career exploration

The dearth of nonprofit employees with hard skills can sometimes work to your advantage as an intern, however; you will have the chance to try a range of projects simply because there aren’t enough people with the both the skills and the time to complete them.

I got to explore a variety of career paths as an Ashoka communications intern. Designing posters gave me insights about what it would be like to work as a graphic designer. Writing and editing Forbes.com blog posts opened my eyes to the possibilities of a career in journalism. Drafting Tweets and Facebook posts let me see what it would be like to pursue internet marketing. I even got to try my hand at storyboarding a video:

Click here to view the embedded video.

3. Who you work with is just as important as what you do

Although I loved the work I did with Ashoka, my team members made my internship so much more enjoyable. I was surrounded by some of the kindest, smartest, and most talented people I have ever met. From my Danish supervisor with an impressive background in political campaigns, to the Chilean former magazine editor who served as our director, to the Ashoka-writer-by-day, lead-guitarist-by-night Stanford grad, each member of the Ashoka USA team helped me grow by sharing new perspectives, knowledge, and friendship. I learned that great teammates are an essential component to finding satisfaction in your work.

4. Ambiguity is a blessing and a curse

Ashoka is a network of social entrepreneurs, so entrepreneurialism is highly valued and assignments are not always spelled out for you. It can be a great learning opportunity when your supervisor comes to you and says, “We should try doing a crowdfunding campaign—can you look into that?”

With few specific guidelines, you have the opportunity to add your own ideas and perspectives to the project. However, loose project guidelines can also leave you feeling a little lost, confused, or stuck. In a workplace that thrives on ambiguity, you must be willing to hit the ground running and ask for more direction when you need it.

5.Don’t lose sight of the “why”

In the day-to-day grind of meetings and project deadlines, it can be easy to lose sight of the bigger picture—the “why” of all your work. Taking the time to regain some perspective about why you do what you do can serve as powerful motivation. For me that perspective came every time I attended a “brown bag luncheon” with an Ashoka Fellow. Hearing the fellows explain how their ideas are solving social problems and and how Ashoka has helped them to get those ideas off the ground served as a reminder and a strong motivator for me.

My experience at Ashoka this summer has been invaluable and will serve me for years to come. I learned so much, and I would recommend a nonprofit internship to anyone.

Thanks Natalie, your experience is inspiring! Readers, did this inspire you to intern with a nonprofit? Search nonprofit internships.

As I ended the last semester of my junior year in college, it became impossible to block out my senior year stress – I’m graduating next May, am I ready for a big girl job?
The process was intimidating. I want to pursue a career in fashion marketing but Nebraska isn’t exactly booming with opportunities to work in fashion, and finding an internship that was both interesting and attainable seemed impossible. I decided to move to LA for the summer, a major fashion hub filled with up and coming designers, businesses and trends, and continued focusing my efforts on finding an internship.

“I spoke with the style and marketing directors about crafting a custom fashion marketing internship… I left feeling confident.”

I used many different sites, but only found success with Internships.com. Through the site, I applied for a style internship posted by LuxeYard and received my first employer response! I was ecstatic, and became even more excited when they told me they had a marketing internship that they wanted to interview me for as well. During my interview I felt totally at ease, like I could really benefit from spending my summer with LuxeYard. I spoke with the style and marketing directors about crafting a custom fashion marketing internship. I wanted to combine aspects from both of the positions I had interviewed for that would give me even more opportunity to gain real world experience. I left feeling confident, and a few days later I was officially LuxeYard’s summer fashion marketing intern!

In the month and a half I’ve spent with LuxeYard, I’ve been exposed to a wealth of opportunities as well as real responsibility. Some days I work with the style team, picking up product samples and providing wardrobe and styling assistance on photo shoots, among other things. Other days I work closely with creative director Kelli McDonald, helping with affiliate advertising, writing articles and interviews, creating graphics and learning about digital marketing. These folks have been incredibly supportive, allowing me to soak up their knowledge and showing me that they are just as invested in my success as I am.

So when I head home in August, I’ll leave with valuable experience, great connections and best of all, the confidence to land a job in fashion marketing.

Congrats Kara, we’re glad you’ve had such a great experience this summer. Readers, check out LuxeYard internships and leave your questions for Kara below.

As the creator of the twitter, @WorkWhimsy, and current Talent Acquisition intern at Scholastic in NYC, Alexa is a true believer in making the most of internship experiences.

By Alexa Procaccino

I had a huge “aha moment” when I was 17 years old and interning at a local design magazine in New Jersey. I had caught a bad case of senioritis and decided to apply to my high school’s internship program to spice up my senior year. Frankly, I was confused about why the program was so small when it had the huge perk of missing school one day per week. When I got placed at my internship with the design magazine, I was absolutely amazed. How could these editors and copywriters at a real magazine actually be giving me real tasks to do? I was so young, but I was doing such cool things that I never thought possible. This taste of actual work experience made my appetite for internships insatiable. Ever since that first experience, I’ve wanted to try absolutely every type of job out through internships. To me, internships are just about the best deal ever. When in the real world is it okay to have a pure learning experience and test out a job for 8-10 weeks? Never.

“My amazing discovery is that I 100% want to work on a talent acquisition team one day as a recruiter.”

Since my senior year in high school, I’ve had five internships, one virtual internship and one externship. After doing a few local internships, some around my school and one abroad, I decided that this summer was going to be my big time, New York City internship experience. I felt ready and had a plan. I started searching for internships in September of last year just to get a head start on the whole process. Internships.com was an integral part in my search. I signed up for the internship alerts, took the Internship Predictor and checked the site just about every day looking for an opportunity in New York City that interested me. Finally, in March, after all of my hard work, I got an e-mail for a job interview in Scholastic Inc. in New York City and landed the job. Like I said before, I’ve had other internships in a couple different fields, but nothing felt right until this one as the Talent Acquisition intern for Scholastic. I’m going to officially dub my internship this summer as my second “aha moment”. I know that I’m really enjoying the work I’ve been doing and the people are just about some of the best I’ve ever met. My amazing discovery is that I 100% want to work on a talent acquisition team one day as a recruiter.

This revelation confirms my true belief in internships. By trying out a bunch of different jobs, I figured out what I was passionate about and what I wasn’t. I’m so grateful that I had these intern experiences early on, because if I hadn’t, I probably would have had too many career changes than actually acceptable.

“On WorkWhimsy, I tweet all of the resources that I found so helpful during my search, while also combining it with my newfound love for Talent Acquisition (thanks to my current internship)…”

My entire past year has been spent reading articles, using Internships.com as my search tool, and constantly sprucing up my resume and writing different cover letters. I realized that I genuinely really enjoyed the entire search process and thought — Why not start a Twitter account where I tweet all of the great job and internship postings I’ve come across, the articles I’ve read, and resume tips I’ve learned? I’m a firm believer in creating your own opportunities, so WorkWhimsy was born that next day. On WorkWhimsy, I tweet all of the resources that I found so helpful during my search, while also combining it with my newfound love for Talent Acquisition (thanks to my current internship) by posting jobs and internships, and just tweeting tips that I’ve learned from all of my diverse internship experiences.

I hope that other students experience the same “aha moment” through their internships. They truly are priceless learning experiences. My advice to you during your internship search (Fall 2012 internship application due dates are coming up!) is to make sure you stay persistent. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t hear back from companies. However, you should always follow up after you apply and also see who you know in your network. Literally tell everyone you know that you’re trying to get an internship at X company. You never know who knows who! Also, use the amazing Internships.com internship alert tool I mentioned before to get up-to-date alerts on new postings that might spark your interest!

Feel free to tweet me any questions you may have! We’re all in this together. Happy interning!

Thanks Alexa, that is great advice, and a pretty amazing testament to the power of an internship! Readers, share your internship “aha moment” below.

It’s no secret, college graduates have it pretty tough today. In many ways, it’s been discussed to the point of almost becoming cliché, but there are some real struggles in place for recent grads. With a seriously downtrodden economy, steady unemployment, a harshly competitive job market, and student debt higher than ever before, there’s good reason for concern. Recent college graduates are entering the “real world” and encountering a very hard time finding jobs for the most part. While at one time college graduates believed that obtaining that golden diploma was a guaranteed ticket to professional success and financial stability, today that simply isn’t the case and isn’t really believed to be the case. More and more often college graduates are facing long periods of unemployment without any real know how for dealing with it.

After spending close to a year after graduation either unemployed or pretty severely underemployed, I have found many positive ways to spend that time. In today’s job market, it’s all about selling your traits, skills, and experience in the right way. Use these few tips to help spruce up your unemployment and create a more marketable resume.

1. Interning

Unfortunately, in many cases today, paid internships have become almost as competitive as salaried positions. More and more young professionals are recognizing the potential internships have to offer. That being said, paid internships are not the end of the line. Unpaid internships can be a wonderful way to create a stronger portfolio as well. During your unemployment, along with your search for paid internships and paid positions, don’t rule out unpaid internships if the right one comes along. Interning at the right company, in the right field, or with the right people can make all the difference. Employers today are looking for candidates with “real world” professional experience and interning is one way to gain that as a newbie grad. Interning is a wonderful way to learn the professional aspects of the industry you’re really interested in, to meet influential people within your field of interest, and to hone in on the areas of the professional world you are really passionate about. Though unpaid is never the most enticing of lures, there’s a lot to gain from the right position.

2. Volunteering

Volunteering can also be an amazing way to gain professional experience and network within your field of interest. Unemployment can be a difficult thing to sell on a resume. By finding volunteer opportunities in the area of industry that you are truly interested in pursuing as a career, you can gain valuable experience. Try to find volunteer opportunities that directly pertain to the area of industry you are seeking work in. This can be a wonderful way to network with people in the field and build relationships with influential industry leaders. While volunteering is certainly about gaining that experience, it is almost more so about building your professional network. Networking has become one of the number one most important aspects of an individual’s job hunt. Many times, finding the position you are truly interested in and getting your foot in the door comes down to the people you know.

3. Continuing Education

Educating yourself further during your unemployment can be a great solution for both sprucing up your resume and sprucing up your day-to-day life. One of the hardest aspects of unemployment is finding ways to occupy your time in a positive and worthwhile manner. Education can be a great solution. Now, I’m not suggesting that you run off to graduate school and incur more student debt. Rather, look into options like open courseware for free online or professional certifications. Open courseware opportunities are available through some of the most renowned and celebrated universities in the country. Find some courses you can take that can add to your resume and help with your job hunt. Taking profession specific courses is one worthwhile option, but you can also consider skill-based classes that might be useful in the working world. Things like math classes, computer programming, and statistics can be useful in a number of different professions and can help put you a mark above other job candidates.

Besides the ability to learn a new language, network internationally, test your limits and meet new friends – studying abroad can help you prepare to land your dream job! Studying abroad may have been a lot of fun, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put a professional spin on your experiences as well. Employers are often impressed with the skills gained while studying abroad, and with these easy steps, you can begin to professionally articulate your study abroad experience.

Featuring Study Abroad in your Cover Letter

The first thing a prospective employer will read from you is your cover letter. This document is intended to outline some of the specific skills you gained from past experiences, and how they can be useful to the position you are applying for. This is your chance to make a good first impression – so make yourself stand out by talking about your study abroad experience!

What you write about should vary depending on the type of position you’re applying for. If you can draw from a specific experience you had abroad that directly relates to the position, great! If not, describing some of the intangible skills you gained while overseas can show an employer how versatile and well rounded you are. Find examples of featuring your study abroad experience in your cover letter.

Showcasing Study Abroad on your Resume

So your prospective employer read your cover letter and it peaked his or her interest. Next thing they will likely do is check out your resume. Here, you want to expand and go into a little more detail about your study abroad experience. There are a variety of ways to showcase your time overseas depending on how much room you have on your resume (remember, as a college graduate a resume should only be one page!)

One method, if you have limited space left, is to add your study abroad experience to the “education” section of your resume and then add the skills you obtained to the “skills” section. Depending on the position you’re applying for, it may be helpful to add all of the countries you visited as well.

If you have a little more room on your resume, or really want to express everything you did while abroad, you could consider adding an “international experience” section to your resume. This section would include a description of your program, skills you obtained, school activities or research you participated in, and of course any internships or jobs you had. Learn more about how to showcase study abroad on your resume.

Using Study Abroad in a Job Interview

Once you make it to the interview, the hard part is over. Clearly, the people at this company think you’re interesting and qualified enough for the position. Now you just need to seal the deal.

There are a variety of questions that you may be asked during an interview. Some questions can be as simple as “what attracted you to the position”, or they can be more complex situational questions. When you’re asked a situational question, try to answer in using the S.T.A.R. Method – situation, task, action, and result. Pulling from your experiences abroad will make this a breeze. Just think about all the amazing things you did while overseas! Learn more about using study abroad in a job interview.

The ability to leverage your study abroad experience in job interviews and apply the skills you learned while overseas to future positions will have any employer begging you to work for them! While going through the job search process, be sure to keep in mind everything you learned while studying abroad and how you can apply that to a position back home. From studying abroad you’ve interacted with different cultures, managed a budget, planned and organized outings in other countries, gained the ability to adapt to new situations, and communicated across language barriers just to name a few! Use these newly acquired skills and experiences to help secure your dream job!

Did you know, according to a recent U.S. News and World Report article, that over 37 percent of students in the U.S. participate in an internship during their undergraduate years? That’s over one third of all students! If you thought simply having an internship on your resume was going to make you stand out to employers, think again. The job market is extremely competitive and employers are only looking to hire the best of the best. It is important to make sure you stand out from the crowd; why not take it to the next level with an internship abroad?

Interning abroad gives you the best of both worlds – you get real life work experience while also getting a lesson in culture. There are countless reasons why interning abroad is a fantastic option, below highlights just a few.

Stand out from the crowd.

First and foremost, interning abroad allows you to differentiate yourself from the rest of your peers when searching for a post-graduation career. Just think, how many of your friends have done an internship? A lot, right? Now how many of those friends interned abroad? Not quite as many. In a time where the job market is extremely competitive, it is essential that your resume stands out.

Interning abroad gives you the opportunity to learn more than you might just sitting in a classroom. Having an abroad internship on your resume shows employers that you are well rounded and cultured. It demonstrates your ability to adapt to unfamiliar situations and easily navigate change. Interning abroad exemplifies your independence. Traveling to a foreign country, speaking a new language, making new friends and working at a new job all require you to be fiercely independent.

Globalize yourself.

Interning abroad prepares you to handle globalization. Globalization refers to the increasing global relation of people, culture and economies. We live in an ever-changing world and globalization plays an integral role in the job market. Luke interned in London in the office of Justine Greening and says “More than the daily work was the experience of working side-by-side with the parliamentary staff and breaking down cultural barriers to achieve common goals. Often after work we would have a pint of lager at the local pub and talk about many things – including the unique differences and similarities in American and British societies.” Interning abroad gives you hands-on experience with working in another country and culture – learning about the similarities and differences between cultures is an important piece to the globalization puzzle.

Knock ‘em dead in an interview.

In order to get a job once you graduate you will likely have to first knock your future employer’s socks off in an interview. And let’s face it, interviews can be daunting. But they don’t have to be – especially if you have something to talk about. You can easily draw on your international internship experience to answer interview questions with poise. The interviewer will love to hear about your experiences while interning abroad and how you plan to use the skills you gained in a position with their company.

Build your professional network.

Finally, interning abroad could open new doors when looking for a career. While you are interning abroad you can network with employers you may not typically meet in the states. They will appreciate the fact that you have a solid understanding of their culture and language as well as understanding the American perspective. Knowing the intricacies of doing business in a foreign culture is a challenge and the fact that you can come into a company with that knowledge makes you very marketable.

There are countless reasons to intern abroad. The experiences you have while living in another country combined with techniques you learn while interning will easily make you an asset to any company. It is important that you take the time to research different programs and countries to find one that suites your needs.

Take your internship to the next level. Find an international internship.
