Every Friday, we’ll have a new Featured Student who will share some fun facts about themselves, be featured on the Employer home page, and get a fun gift from us.
Just for being so awesome.
My interests and passions pretty much explain why I feel like living in D.C. is perfect for me right now. I’ve been obsessed with journalism since middle school. Back then, it was cooing over the announcing and analysis of sportscasters like Bob Costas. Now, I am enamored by investigative and enterprise reporting found on This American Life or in The New Yorker, while still enjoying the standards news stories of the New York Times or Politico.
I’m glad to live in an era when these interests can be a part of my day — all day — because of social media and smartphones. Twitter, Facbeook and Tumblr are all part of my routine, and I pride myself in using these media constructively. However, I do feel a distinct loss of complete down time, and kind of yearn for the days when I was 12, just playing baseball or poring over baseball cards.
In addition to reporting, I work as a page designer for my student newspaper — The GW Hatchet — putting together the dead-tree version that will likely be obsolete in 10 years or less. I love my job and print newspapers, but the decline of print news surprisingly doesn’t bother me at all. I think losing out on print newspapers may even for the best. What’s wrong with the iPad being the future?
