Who would have ever thought this little Afro-wearing hip hop lover would be interning at a country station? Not me!
I actually intern with The Star Radio Group in Fredericksburg, Va. The Star Radio Group consists of four stations, including their most popular one, 93.3 WFLS, their country station. Thus far, the experience has had its pros and cons, but the diversity I have experienced has outweighed the cons.
For the past month, I have participated in various departments within the station, including promotions, sales, production and on-air. My main job duty is working in the promotions department of Star Radio Group. Promotions is the heart of the station. It not only helps bring money into the station, but it keeps The Star Radio Group name out there.
Being involved with promotions, I see how the radio stations — especially WFLS — are involved with the community. WFLS hosts “Lunch at Riverpoint Park,” where mothers bring their kids out to enjoy lunch at the park. Another weekly event WFLS does with different offices in the area is “Coffee Break,” catered by Panera Bread (yum). Working with promotions, I also help with car shows, community days, giveaways and country concerts.
The one con of this internship, I will say, is all the office work. Sometimes I feel like I am just a personal assistant to everyone. At times I might get discouraged, but I just try to see the bright side: I am gaining good office skills.
This month, I have learned you will have your ups and down at the workplace, but sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. At the end of the day, I am having such a fun learning at experience at this country station and I’ve gained a new love for iced coffee (they keep me busy as a bee)!
