Being an Intern With Uloop is Like Being a Superhero

April 12, 2012

Meghan Callahan (@meghanc303) is a sophomore at Denison University where she is majoring in Creative Writing with a double minor in Art History and Theater. She is always on the lookout for more writing opportunities, and encourages you to connect with her.

Being an intern for Uloop is very similar to being a superhero.

Okay, so maybe I don’t get a costume (though I’ve been requesting one for a while now…) but the type of work I do is specific, remote, and carefully orchestrated, just like a superhero’s work must be. I’ve written and edited articles from places as diverse as downtown Chicago, the inside of a pizza restaurant, and backstage at a theater. Just like crime, good journalism never stops, and Uloop understands and trains its people to be ready for a story at all times. It is this training experience that is one of the elements of Uloop that I value the most. This internship is very much a mutualistic mentoring experience, where individuals are encouraged to grow and also encouraged to help the company grow as a whole.

Uloop is both an online marketplace for students and more recently, a provider of relevant student news.

“It is this team of unique talents, garnered from across the U.S., which really makes Uloop an internship experience unlike any other I’ve had.”

When I first began at Uloop as a writer, I was impressed with not only the professional attitude of the company, but also how open they were to new ideas. If I had a suggestion on how to garner more readers or otherwise improve the site, there was always someone to listen to my idea and excited about trying to implement it. Uloop is very much like the Justice League in this sense; though we all know who the big bosses are, we all have something unique to contribute to the team, and that is recognized and praised. It is this team of unique talents, garnered from across the U.S., which really makes Uloop an internship experience unlike any other I’ve had. I interact daily with people I’ve never met in person, many of whom live in places I’ve never visited, and yet we are able to work together to create a professional and compelling news source. And if that isn’t super, I don’t know what is!

A few weeks ago, we interviewed Uloop’s Director of Student News to get the inside scoop on editorial and writing internships. Check out Uloop’s internships, they are looking for students all across the country.
