MeghanCallahan headshot 150x150 Being an Intern With Uloop is Like Being a SuperheroBy Meghan Callahan

Being an intern for Uloop is very similar to being a superhero.

Okay, so maybe I don’t get a costume (though I’ve been requesting one for a while now…) but the type of work I do is specific, remote, and carefully orchestrated, just like a superhero’s work must be. I’ve written and edited articles from places as diverse as downtown Chicago, the inside of a pizza restaurant, and backstage at a theater. Just like crime, good journalism never stops, and Uloop understands and trains its people to be ready for a story at all times. It is this training experience that is one of the elements of Uloop that I value the most. This internship is very much a mutualistic mentoring experience, where individuals are encouraged to grow and also encouraged to help the company grow as a whole.

uloop logo Being an Intern With Uloop is Like Being a Superhero

Uloop is both an online marketplace for students and more recently, a provider of relevant student news.

“It is this team of unique talents, garnered from across the U.S., which really makes Uloop an internship experience unlike any other I’ve had.”

When I first began at Uloop as a writer, I was impressed with not only the professional attitude of the company, but also how open they were to new ideas. If I had a suggestion on how to garner more readers or otherwise improve the site, there was always someone to listen to my idea and excited about trying to implement it. Uloop is very much like the Justice League in this sense; though we all know who the big bosses are, we all have something unique to contribute to the team, and that is recognized and praised. It is this team of unique talents, garnered from across the U.S., which really makes Uloop an internship experience unlike any other I’ve had. I interact daily with people I’ve never met in person, many of whom live in places I’ve never visited, and yet we are able to work together to create a professional and compelling news source. And if that isn’t super, I don’t know what is!

A few weeks ago, we interviewed Uloop’s Director of Student News to get the inside scoop on editorial and writing internships. Check out Uloop’s internships, they are looking for students all across the country.

ting head shot Intern Picks: Marketing InternshipsBy Ting-Tien Wee

On our site alone there are thousands (18,000) of students studying a degree related to marketing. But what exactly is marketing? The American Marketing Association defines marketing as “the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.” This sounds pretty complicated, but I always understood it as the main way to get people to buy your products/services. From the Dayton Daily News today:

Yair Riemer, vice president of marketing for internships.com, said the value of internships has never been higher, because employers view the positions as a way to identify job candidates and measure their abilities.

Basically “internships are essentially the ‘new interview,’ ” he said. “Employers are using internships to ‘test-drive talent,’ and build a long term successful employee base.”

ting head shot Intern Picks: Magazine InternshipsBy Ting-Tien Wee

When looking through the internships posted this week, I noticed a good amount of magazine companies posting their internships and immediately thought, “Do we even have enough English majors to fill these positions?” A few seconds later, I realized how ignorant this thought was. Just like any other company, online and print publications require the execution of all business functions in order to be successful. This fact alone is enough to negate my preconditioned thought about who works for magazine companies, but on top of that magazines cover virtually every topic imaginable on this planet. This means that the internships posted on our site from these companies have the potential to appeal to people with all different kinds of interests.

Here are a few of our top magazine internships of the week.

5in5 madtravelers MTlogo 5 in 5! with Mark, PR Manager for MadTravelersMadTravelers manages BoxMyDorm, Ship2School, and LugLess. They offer travelers the freedom to be unburdened by their luggage. They can get anything, anywhere with better customer service, and at a lower cost. They’re currently looking for campus reps.

Essentially, MadTravelers is a travel agent for your luggage. Mark Gilman, the PR Manager, crafts a PR narrative and then spreads the word to blogs, press, tv, as well as using social media for direct outreach. The best way to describe what he does is “applied creative writing.” For fun, he swing dances and goes to cooking parties.

1. How did MadTravelers get started, how can someone who is interested in your work get started?

5in5 madtravelers MarkGilman1 5 in 5! with Mark, PR Manager for MadTravelers

Mark, PR Manager for MadTravelers

In 2005 BoxMyDorm was started by Penn State and U. Penn students who wanted to create a summer storage service. We then expanded to GW and U. Maryland, then two years ago we went nationwide, servicing colleges coast-to-coast. We chose to expand further by developing spin off services and placing them under the MadTravelers brand. Similar to BoxMyDorm is Ship2School, where students can ship their belongings to or from school at a very competitive rate, as well as Lugless, where we can deliver luggage across the US for a low flat fee and internationally for less than most major carriers.

As for those who want to enter the business, college students will always need summer storage. There’s definitely room for others to get into the game. But I think we’re doing a pretty good job already.

2. What’s the future of your industry or job?

Continued local operations by students and moving companies alongside nationwide services like BoxMyDorm that can provide for any student at any school. We think that a more standardized model can present students the same service at a better cost.

5in5 madtravelers BMDLogo 5 in 5! with Mark, PR Manager for MadTravelers

3. What do you look for when you hire an intern or entry-level candidate?

At MadTravelers we all wear many hats. So we look for interns who are comfortable with taking on multiple duties. We also look for candidates who would fit in well with our company culture. We’re a mix of hard working, direct, and energetic, so someone who blends well with that is important.

4. What is one thing an intern can do to make a favorable impression?

Beyond the willingness to work, I think the most important thing an intern can do is grow during their tenure. Ask questions, try to learn more, show a genuine interest in what is going on. Also, smiling helps.

5. Can you share a positive intern story and an intern horror story? No names needed…

One of our former interns in New York City was going to brunch with his family. He was driving his dad’s car and he backed into the founder’s friend’s Mercedez. Needless to say it was an uncomfortable summer for that intern. True story.

Thanks Mark! BoxMyDorm is currently looking for campus representatives – apply here.

Chelsea Evans is a recent graduate from Tufts University. She now works in Her Campus‘s Human Resources department. Chelsea and her Her Campus colleagues recently went on a Contiki trip and saw first-hand the benefits of traveling abroad to gain global experience.

ChelseaEvansHCHeadshot 150x150 Contiki: The Adventure of a Lifetime and a Great Resume BoostBy Chelsea Evans

In today’s competitive job market, college students must take advantage of every opportunity available to make themselves stand out to potential employers. It’s one thing to list expert communicator, detail oriented, and adaptable as skills on a resume, but it’s another to have a plethora of real-life examples to explain how you’ve strengthened and utilized these talents. One of the best ways to gain this real-life experience? Travelling abroad with Contiki!

Contiki organizes over 200 trips across the globe for 18 to 35-year-olds, so you are sure to find one that fits your preferences and schedule. Group travel and exposure to foreign cultures will help you fine-tune your communication and organizational skills, both of which are valued by employers.

Chelsea and her colleagues on their recent Contiki trip

For instance, in my role at Her Campus Media, I am expected to communicate effectively with many different college students. My fellow travelers on my London, Paris, and Amsterdam Contiki trip represented several different countries, but this didn’t stop us from becoming fast friends who were familiar with each others’ cultures and perspectives. This ability to communicate well with people from other backgrounds will surely help me relate to and communicate with college students across the country on a daily basis. Moreover, I now know it’s best to examine situations (work-related or not) from several different angles in order to identify the best plan of action. This is an invaluable problem solving skill.

“Keeping up in a fast-paced work environment will be a piece of cake after learning to navigate a foreign city.”

Employers look for adaptable and flexible employees. There’s no better way to demonstrate these qualities than by recalling the time you travelled to a foreign country and swiftly adapted to the local customs! Keeping up in a fast-paced work environment will be a piece of cake after learning to navigate a foreign city, ordering food and buying stamps in a foreign language, and visiting every tourist attraction all in one day on a Contiki trip.

Madeline Osman (@MaddyOsman) is a Junior Marketing major at the University of Iowa who currently works as a Sony Brand Ambassador and also as a Web Designer for her school’s student union. Madeline is obsessed with technology and travel and hopes to use her degree to combine her passions post-graduation. Madeline writes about all these things on her blog.

MadelineOsman headshot 144x300 The Many Perks of Working as a Sony Brand AmbassadorBy Madeline Osman

Ever since I was a child, I have been obsessed with and entranced by technology.

Imagine my excitement when Sony hired me as a Brand Ambassador on the University of Iowa campus. I could not believe my luck. I accepted the offer and was immediately sent a large sampling of Sony’s finest products: the Cyber-shot digital camera, VAIO S Laptop, Tablet S, and much more.

Awesome “free” Sony products aside, I have to put a lot of work into my job to be successful. The Sony Brand Ambassador program has two main directives: drive traffic to your campus’ unique Education Store URL (http://www.sony.com/UIowa) and hold events to raise awareness for the Sony brand: whether they are on your own or with student organizations. I am also expected to keep up with Sony in the news, attend bi-weekly conference calls, engage my social networks with Sony-related content, and build relationships with student leaders on campus. Fitting everything in takes about 15 hours a week.

“Awesome ‘free’ Sony products aside, I have to put a lot of work into my job to be successful… I’ve learned so much more in five months as a Sony Brand Ambassador than I have in any other job or class.”

Working for Sony has given me real world experience in almost every aspect of marketing. I’ve learned how to plan and advertise events, different elements of personal selling and promotion, and how to efficiently use social media. Besides marketing skills, working with Sony has given me the opportunity and excuse to network with many different people on campus. I have had meetings with campus technology purchasers and professionals, leaders of student organizations, professors, and more. People are pretty receptive to what I have to say, but I have to tailor my message to each individual. Sony also gives each Ambassador detailed reports of their activity that show exactly how effective we are at our jobs. I always know where I am succeeding and what could use work.

Brand ambassadorships are an excellent way to get to know a company while building real-world skills. I’ve learned so much more in five months as a Sony Brand Ambassador than I have in any other job or class. I would encourage any extroverted Marketing major to get involved in a way that will set them apart.

Many companies offer virtual internships and look for students to intern part-time, right from their campus! Check out these campus ambassador opportunities.

sab logo stacked 300x215 The Advantages of Interning AbroadThis is a guest post from StudyAbroad.com – the Internet’s leading source of information for students seeking a study abroad program.  Find your study abroad program at StudyAbroad.com, and visit us on Facebook and Twitter.

By Valeri Boyle

Did you know, according to a recent U.S. News and World Report article, that over 37 percent of students in the U.S. participate in an internship during their undergraduate years? That’s over one third of all students! If you thought simply having an internship on your resume was going to make you stand out to employers, think again. The job market is extremely competitive and employers are only looking to hire the best of the best. It is important to make sure you stand out from the crowd; why not take it to the next level with an internship abroad?

Interning abroad gives you the best of both worlds – you get real life work experience while also getting a lesson in culture. There are countless reasons why interning abroad is a fantastic option, below highlights just a few.

Stand out from the crowd.

First and foremost, interning abroad allows you to differentiate yourself from the rest of  your peers when searching for a post-graduation career. Just think, how many of your friends have done an internship? A lot, right? Now how many of those friends interned abroad? Not quite as many. In a time where the job market is extremely competitive, it is essential that your resume stands out.

blog pinkdressfirl 3 20 12 200x300 The Advantages of Interning AbroadInterning abroad gives you the opportunity to learn more than you might just sitting in a classroom. Having an abroad internship on your resume shows employers that you are well rounded and cultured. It demonstrates your ability to adapt to unfamiliar situations and easily navigate change. Interning abroad exemplifies your independence. Traveling to a foreign country, speaking a new language, making new friends and working at a new job all require you to be fiercely independent.

Globalize yourself.

Interning abroad prepares you to handle globalization. Globalization refers to the increasing global relation of people, culture and economies. We live in an ever-changing world and globalization plays an integral role in the job market. Luke interned in London in the office of Justine Greening and says “More than the daily work was the experience of working side-by-side with the parliamentary staff and breaking down cultural barriers to achieve common goals. Often after work we would have a pint of lager at the local pub and talk about many things – including the unique differences and similarities in American and British societies.” Interning abroad gives you hands-on experience with working in another country and culture – learning about the similarities and differences between cultures is an important piece to the globalization puzzle.

Read more about Luke’s London internship.

Knock ‘em dead in an interview.

In order to get a job once you graduate you will likely have to first knock your future employer’s socks off in an interview. And let’s face it, interviews can be daunting. But they don’t have to be – especially if you have something to talk about. You can easily draw on your international internship experience to answer interview questions with poise. The interviewer will love to hear about your experiences while interning abroad and how you plan to use the skills you gained in a position with their company.

Build your professional network.

Finally, interning abroad could open new doors when looking for a career. While you are interning abroad you can network with employers you may not typically meet in the states. They will appreciate the fact that you have a solid understanding of their culture and language as well as understanding the American perspective. Knowing the intricacies of doing business in a foreign culture is a challenge and the fact that you can come into a company with that knowledge makes you very marketable.

There are countless reasons to intern abroad. The experiences you have while living in another country combined with techniques you learn while interning will easily make you an asset to any company. It is important that you take the time to research different programs and countries to find one that suites your needs.

Take your internship to the next level. Find an international internship.
