Dominique Van Ausdal, Development & Communications Intern at Elite Research
Dominique Van Ausdal is majoring in Business Administration at the University of Texas. He is also pursuing a Teaching Certification in Mathematics at UTeach Dallas for grades 4-8.
What excites you most about your new internship?
I am excited for this internship mainly because I will gain valuable business experience that I can take and use in the future. It will also keep me a bit busy, more organized, and more motivated during the semester.
When you are not interning, what do you like to do with your free time?
I run a lot, participate in triathlons, and just try to stay in shape. I am also a huge football fan, constantly reading anything involving the sport.
How did Internships.com help you find your internship with Elite Research?
I wouldn’t have this internship position if I hadn’t been on internships.com and applied for the job position. I really couldn’t find a valuable source for internships anywhere else online, not even my school’s career center site.

David Murdico (@DavidMurdico) is the Executive Creative Director and Managing Partner at Supercool Creative, a digital creative agency specializing in big ideas, social media marketing, interactive and online video production for brands like Capcom, Dish, T-Mobile, Pizza Hut and IBM. You can find more information on Twitter and Blog.
1. How did you get started in the industry? How can someone who is interested in your work get started?
David Murdico, Executive Creative Director & Managing Partner of Supercool Creative
I took an unusual path starting with an English degree from USC, going into film and TV, then online video, then starting Supercool Creative. I would say the best way to get started is to read as much as you can about online marketing, use social networking channels on your own, experiment with all things digital, video and do an internship to get a feel for what you like and where you want to be.
2. What’s the future of your industry or job?
The future of social media and digital marketing will be an increased focus on results, bottom lines, rather than a count of Twitter followers, likes and video views. People and agencies that can show results will thrive.
3. What do you look for when you hire an intern or entry-level candidate?
Enthusiasm. Someone who loves the online space and is cool to work with.
4. What is one thing an intern can do to make a favorable impression?
Just be yourself, and if yourself is lively and enthusiastic that helps.
5. Can you share a positive intern story and an intern horror story? No names needed…
Positive: We had an intern come in on the first day and knock out a design for a last-minute YouTube brand channel design for a Fortune 50 company.
Negative: We had an intern quit after his first day.

1. How did you get started in the industry? How can someone who is interested in your work get started?
Tracie Morris, Certified Wedding Planner for You
I got started in the wedding industry in 1999 after I planned my wedding. An individual that is interested in becoming a wedding planner should definitely participate in a internship. Although they are typically unpaid having the hands on experience is very valuable.
2. What’s the future of your industry or job?
I feel the future will definitely have a need for professional wedding planners as more and more couples are professional workers and are very busy with their careers and don’t have the time to plan their dream weddings.
3. What do you look for when you hire an intern or entry-level candidate?
We look for intern’s that are organized, punctual, flexible, enthusiastic, positive attitude and have a passion for weddings and really want to learn as much as possible in the few short months we are together!
4. What is one thing an intern can do to make a favorable impression?
I love when an intern has already started taking classes in wedding planning or has previous experience in any kind of events.
5. Can you share a positive intern story and an intern horror story? No names needed…
I have been blessed this past wedding season with 2 wonderful interns. They both had all the attributes I was looking for and we made a wonderful team this past summer with all of our weddings. Other interns did not do so well because they decided they didn’t like working Saturdays, the hours were too long or just didn’t show up for work at a wedding which was a huge headache when I required their help.

Mario Davis is a college student and current intern for 1SaleADay.

By Mario Davis
Internships provide one of the best ways to get involved and learn about a company. For three months, I have had the opportunity and privilege to develop my social media skills with the largest independently owned deal-a-day e-commerce website, 1SaleADay. I reported directly to the Social Media Manager, Anais Sori who created a learning regiment that covered my time as an intern.
The learning experience that I endured surpassed my expectations. For example, I would have never learned to use tools like Spredfast and Argyle Social on my own. Not only can I use these tools but I know how to use them effectively to engage with customers, represent a brand and interact with clients.
It doesn’t stop there! I also got the opportunity to put a promotion together for BensOutlet that attracted over 900 comments! It was an iPhone kickstand (shaped like a plunger) giveaway that got the audience excited. The promotion generated nearly 500 likes, 300 shares and close to 1,000 comments. I also got to make cold calls to prospects.
Another area I focused on was analytics. This was fun. Watching the numbers from Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest and Google Plus grow and decrease based on types of posts and engaging responses.
The 1SaleADay team was made up of professionals filled with fun and family-like personalities. My training always included assistance and my ability to grow never ceased. I can go on forever about the many good experiences I had.
There were also some learning curves that I experienced. For example, asking questions. I have always been a do it yourself “figure it out” type of guy so the communication was sometimes confused. Although this wasn’t a major issue because I have been working on it daily, had I been able to alter it sooner, it might have proven more productive.
Also, my habit to making decisions wasn’t always in line with my tasks. In other words sometimes I would make the wrong decision then try to fix it quickly. I have a habit to correct things as changes are needed and instead of taking time to breathe, look it over and make the changes… I jump right into the changes.
Otherwise, the experience has been a fun one and I know that the next intern will have just as memorable, a learning experience as I did with 1SaleADay!
Mario, thanks for taking the time to share this with us! Students, start searching for an internship now!

1. How did you get started in the industry? How can someone who is interested in your work get started?
Kasia Bosne, Creator of Boutique on 57
My fashion journey started with attending and graduating from Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in NYC majoring in Marketing and International Trade.
Then I continued my interest in fashion with experience at Giorgio Armani and Gianni Versace flagship stores in NYC where I developed long list of celebrity clients. I loved dressing women connecting inspiring and servicing them the best I could. After 10 years of experience with top designer fashion houses I decided to challenge myself and grow my career further. I have opened my own private showroom/boutique called Boutiqueon57 5 years ago where I collaborate with top designer’s women’s ready to wear, and accessories overstock.
Anyone can pursuit their dreams and passions. In an industry where everything changes every day its essential to create enthusiasm, and excitement. It comes from initiating an authentic dialogue that triggers an emotion because Fashion is not a monologue. These days we have amazing stylists, artists, fashion boutiques, muses who often make history. I think this is the best way to gain some experience and knowledge from them. Always surround yourself with people who are better and smarter then you. That’s what have always worked for me. My mantra to all new comers is: Believe in yourself, because if you don’t no one else will!
2. What’s the future of your industry or job?
Like I mentioned previously this industry is changing every day. That’s why its critical to be very creative, hard working, current and follow the market demands.
3. What do you look for when you hire an intern or entry-level candidate?
The most important thing I look for when I hire new interns is their professionalism, their passion and connection, willingness to be flexible. I love creativity, thinking out of the box, eagerness to learn, punctuality.
4. What is one thing an intern can do to make a favorable impression?
I respect professionalism: good manners, easy going personality, well (appropriate) dressed, well groomed, intelligence and using common sense.
5. Can you share a positive intern story and an intern horror story? No names needed…
So far I must say I had only incredible stories. The last few interns that worked at Boutique on 57 were fabulous. We worked as a great team and were learning from each other every day. They were extremely knowledgeable, professional and always happy. It was a pleasure to be surrounded by such positive young talents.
My horror stories were only when great interns were hired by someone else.

1. How did you get started in the industry? How can someone who is interested in your work get started?
Christopher Kerney, PR & Social Media Manager for WorkplaceDiversity.com
I actually got started in the industry by my Uncle. He has done a lot of corporate event planning and marketing for some big companies. I originally wanted to be in television but when I interned doing public relations and event planning, I knew from that point on that this is what my heart was set on doing.
2. What’s the future of your industry or job?
The future of my job, as a public relations/social media manager, is always changing. I started a Facebook account when I was in college when Facebook was only for college students. If you would have told me back then that I would be getting paid to do work on Facebook, I would have laughed. With the ever growing trend of social media and being able to do it on your phones, computers and tablets, the results are endless. There is always going to be a new trend to get involved with and a new app to start mastering.
3. What do you look for when you hire an intern or entry-level candidate?
When I hire interns to work with me, I look for a few things. The biggest thing I look for is how they communicate with me. My first statement is always: “So tell me about yourself.” This is your chance to tell me about what school you go to, what you like to do for fun, what makes you different from everyone else and why you are sitting in front of me. I want someone who can open up and talk about themselves. I need someone social who is computer savvy and isn’t afraid to ask questions. My interns do hands on work and I need to make sure I can trust them on the phone, sending emails, doing follow-ups, etc.
4. What is one thing an intern can do to make a favorable impression?
The biggest thing an intern can do to make me remember them would be to tell me something that makes you stand out. Are you a marathon runner? Did you climb Mt. Everest? Have you been scuba diving off the coast of Australia? Make me interested in you and leave something that I can look at your resume and say, “Oh that’s the guy who organizes charity events for the wounded.”
5. Can you share a positive intern story and an intern horror story? No names needed…
I had one intern who had no experience, no idea what they wanted to do with their lives and was just looking to try something different. Their resume didn’t scream out, “superstar” but they had enough that I brought them in for an interview. Within two minutes of the interview, I knew he would be amazing. He was. He asked a ton of questions, had a positive can-do attitude and worked hard. I wrote him the best recommendation letter of my life and I refer him to everyone who is looking. On the flip side, I’ve had interns who have had great experience on their resume and turned out to be the worst interns I’ve ever had because they lacked motivation. This is why I always get in touch with every person who applies for my intern positions because it doesn’t hurt to bring them in and see what they are about.
