Sewing/Samplemaking Intern at RTW Studio

Bookmark This

We are currently seeking internship candidates for Fall and Winter.
Our internships are an active working and learning environment, not the typical unpaid assistant position that is so common in the industry.
Interns will train on and actively assist in all aspects of the product development process both on client work and studio jobs. Additionally they will undergo extensive direct training to develop and improve industry-level sewing and studio technique.
Be ready to learn!

We are a patternmaking and development studio, primarily serving the RTW industry in New York City, with a growing global list of clients. We develop styles and samples that you've definitely seen on the runway at NYFW, in editorials of major magazines, and on celebrities on the red carpet.

This would be an excellent position for someone seriously interested in pursuing a career in fashion. Understanding high end construction methods is essential for any designer, and is highly valuable in the industry but is not taught in much detail in fashion school.

Interns work alongside staff stitchers and patternmakers to learn industry methods and standards, and time allowing, will have the opportunity to develop their own styles from concept to sample with active mentorship.

Internships are unpaid but there is a huge potential to lead to paid freelance work.

Intern assignments will include:
Measuring live models
Fitting on forms and live models
Pattern Adjustments
Occasional small errands
Flat sketching by hand and Adobe Illustrator

Common areas of construction that will be taught include:
Notched lapels
Cuffs/Cuff Guards
Besom/Welt pockets
Fly Assembly
...and much more!

The ideal intern is perfectionistic and meticulous, and has some sort of experience with sewing on industrial equipment. Our studio has multiple industrial straight stitch machines, industrial merrow, industrial coverstitch, blindstitch, and zigzag. Hopefully there will be opportunity to try all of them out and learn how they operate!
