OVERVIEW: Ethos and Boston Money Management
Ethos is a private, non-profit organization established in 1973 that is dedicated to promoting independence, dignity and well-being among the elderly and disabled through quality, affordable and culturally-appropriate home and community-based care As a state-authorized Aging Services Access Point (ASAP), Ethos administers the Elder Protective Services and Money Management Programs for the entire city of Boston and also coordinates all the non-institutional home and community-based services for elderly and disabled residents of the southwest Boston neighborhoods of West Roxbury, Hyde Park, Roslindale, Jamaica Plain, and Mattapan. BMMP provides money management services to elderly and disabled clients who have been deemed medically incapable of self-managing their finances. Ethos receives permission to take over their social security payments and ensures monthly that rent and utility payments are made (from a central account that Ethos manages). This service also safeguards clients from financial exploitation and many of these “rep payee” clients are referred from our Protective Services Department here at Ethos.
The Volunteer Services program recruits volunteers for roles to help the elderly, including Friendly Visitors, Medical Escorts, and Shopping Assistants. Volunteers help enhance the services already provided by the Home Care and Protective Services Department – to improve the quality of life for isolated seniors.
This internship would require monthly home visits of about one hour per client where as “client services coordinator” interns would review client spending plan and bills, provide client coaching regarding personal expenditures, assist with client check cashing, and also review client wellness and address/refer out other identified client needs. Interns would be assigned 5-10 clients where one visit per month per client would be required. At the end of each visit a short worksheet/report is completed. At the end of the month interns would be required to sit with a BMMP staff member to review all client reports.
