Interns with Northwestern Mutual’s network office in Springfield get real life, client facing experiences. They get to test drive what it feels like to build client relationships and a financial services practice. Interns receive extensive training and development and get hands on experiences, all with the chance to earn a fulltime opportunity upon graduating college.
In fact, the Northwestern Mutual internship program was named a Top Ten Internship by Vault, Inc. for 20 straight years (Vault Guide to Interships, 2016 Edition).

Our internship program is more about developing people than selling products. You will learn what it takes to be successful, while sharpening your skills in communications and marketing to help build personal and professional self-confidence. You will also discover the rewards that come from helping others as you bring a full-service approach to your clients’ needs and provide guidance and solutions that will have a positive impact on families and businesses for years to come.
Flexible Schedule: Internships are available full-time or part-time, depending on your schedule. Many interns start full-time in the summer and continue working for us part-time through the rest of their college careers. Throughout the internship experience, you’ll have access to Northwestern Mutual mentors and joint-work programs to support your development and help build your practice.
Commissions: In addition to the development and productivity stipends, interns will earn commissions on their sales.
Development Stipend: The development component provides an incentive of up to $1,000 to learn about the business, develop sales skills, and engage in defined college intern training activities during each program period.
Productivity Stipend: The productivity component is based on the number of lives written and submitted by the college intern during each program period. Interns will earn a $500 stipend for writing and submitting five lives. An additional
$500 stipend can be earned for writing and submitting another five lives -- for a total of $1,000 for 10 lives each program period.
