Description

Senator Steinberg offers the opportunity to intern in his district office, across the street from the State Capitol. Interns will work both individually and with staff and other interns, will develop professional and leadership skills, and will learn the workings of the legislative process. The internship is focused on intern learning and development. We believe that interns can do wonderful work, and we believe that investing in interns’ development is the best way to support that work.

If you want human resources, management or leadership experience, you should apply for our Human Resources position. HR interns help coordinate the internship program as a whole. They improve our application and interview process, our training process for new interns, and our intern alumni relations program. They plan team get-togethers, help train team leaders, and seek feedback from interns about how to improve the internship program.

The internship is unpaid. If you are a student, you may be able to earn academic credit; speak to your school’s internship and/or career office.

Update: We are currently full for Winter 2013, but we encourage you to apply for the Spring, Summer 2014 quarter

Responsibilities

Recent and current projects include developing a mentoring program for new interns, incorporating the DISC behavioral assessment into our internship, developing and improving our training of team leaders, and identifying Capitol events and meetings other interns will want to attend.

Depending on your personal style, it can be a heavily systems-focused position, meaning you can spend a lot of time coming up with new procedures, instructions, etc. Or it can be heavily personal-interaction-focused position, meaning you'll be working closely with team members to help them along. Either way, it will definitely some include elements of both.
