Description

This Continuity of Operations Intern position is located in the National Preparedness Division in FEMA/DHS Region II, NYC. FEMA's mission is to coordinate planning, preparedness, mitigation, and recovery for all types of disasters and emergencies. The United States Government and the private-sector have an obligation for the safety of its employees and the continuation of essential functions if circumstances require an emergency relocation of personnel, operations and functions. The primary purpose of this position is to help the Continuity Manager to provide advice and guidance to other federal, state, and local governments in the planning and capability assessment efforts of the Continuity of Operations Program (COOP), Pandemic Planning and Cyber Security.

Responsibilities

DUTIES:
The Intern will support the Continuity Manager to help coordinate and manage the continuity of operations program for Federal, State level (New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands) and tribal, local governments within Region II states. The intern will help the Continuity Specialists build continuity programming between FEMA and the Continuity of Operations Working Groups (CWG) and will help organize, manage and facilitate training and exercise events, write policy papers, evaluate programs, develop plans, conduct outreach, instruct classes help identify gaps or weaknesses in pandemic and cyber security planning policies procedures and attend meetings.

In addition, the intern will work with the Continuity Manager to create new partnerships with the private sector, health and nonprofit organizations, and local universities to enhance continuity programming.

• Ability to communicate in writing.
• Ability to analyze current or projected operating programs.
• Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
• Knowledge of continuity principles, practices, techniques, and procedures..
• Ability to plan and execute work.

Requirements

(1) Enrolled in a training, emergency management, public relations or business program at the Graduate School level. (2) Preferred knowledge of continuity of operations; either at the government level or the business level. (3) Previous work or extensive study at bachelor’s level in business, communications, training, emergency management or public relations. (4) Interns must be United States Citizens. (5) Accepted Interns must complete a background investigation and suitability of employment prior to start date (this process can take one month or longer).
