DescriptionThe Office of State Senator Gustavo Rivera is seeking interns Bronx District Office in THREE areas: POLICY, COMMUNICATIONS, and COMMUNITY AFFAIRS.
QUALIFICATIONS: Excellent administrative, communication/phone and computer skills (Microsoft Word and Excel) required. Strong writing and organizational skills required. Ability to work cooperatively with diverse staff and communities, as well as interact with government staff are a must. Community organizing and event planning experience a plus. Knowledge of NYC Government and community affairs experience a plus. Bi/multilingual ability a plus.
VOLUNTEER INTERNSHIPS: 10-20 hours a week including some evenings or weekends. Course credit possible. Semester, summer or year-round opportunities available. Unpaid.

ResponsibilitiesPolicy: The Office of State Senator Gustavo Rivera is seeking energetic, talented, passionate internship candidates who are looking to improve the welfare of New York City through the legislative and policy-making processes. Candidates with an interest or background in the following policy areas are particularly encouraged to apply: education, community development, public safety, civil rights, election reform, social services, transportation, environmental or finance/budgets. This is a perfect opportunity for students who are completing studies in public affairs, public policy, and urban planning to gain meaningful government experience.
Specific responsibilities will include: conducting policy research; analyzing City and State policies and agency programs; developing and drafting policy recommendations; tracking and responding to agenda priorities; meeting regularly with advocacy organizations, government agencies and officials, and stakeholders on a variety of issues; representing the Senate office at public events; and writing policy briefings and reports for the office.
Qualifications: Excellent written and oral communications skills. Self-motivated, determined and able to work independently, as well as collaboratively. Excel in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Strong problem solving skills.
Community Affairs: The Office of Senator Rivera seeks interns for the Community Organizing & Community Affairs Department. The department assists city residents in overcoming obstacles in navigating government agencies, maintains deep relationships with local leaders and concerned neighbors, and engages in community organizing with elected and neighborhood leaders and groups to tackle tough issues facing city residents. Ideal opportunity for individuals looking for government and community organizing experience.
Responsibilities: Assist staff in receiving and responding to constituent inquiries (Phone, Email/Mail, Facsimile, etc.); Assist in event planning including scheduling, materials preparation and logistical support (Town Hall Meetings, Street Fairs, Parades, Community Board Meetings, etc.); Represent the Senator at select meetings and events; Support community organizing campaigns including scheduling and preparing trainings; Provide clerical support including data entry, filing and materials/correspondence distribution; Attend skills-building trainings and educational forums; Contribute to other office projects as necessary to advance the mission of the State Senator.
Press Office: We are seeking an active Press /Communications Office intern. Duties include writing press materials, attending press conferences, coordinating with local NYC media outlets, and constantly monitoring all New York City media. Candidates should have strong writing skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines is required.
