DescriptionHomestead Hospice is a premier provider of palliative care to support patients and their loved ones during the final phase of a terminal illness. We focus on quality of life rather than a cure. Our purpose is to provide comfort and give support to patients and the families during "life's most important journey". We neither seek to end or prolong life, but to ease the pain and discomfort so that our patients can live the remainder of their lives with dignity. We not only provide medical care, but spiritual and emotional support as well. Our psychology interns will have direct patient/family contact. They will be able to observe family dynamics, assist in offering companionship, comfort and emotional support to both patients and family members, learn active listening skills and shadow members of our team such as nurses, chaplains and social workers. (Our office covers 16 counties in Middle Georgia) homesteadhospice.com
ResponsibilitiesInterns will complete an orientation and training with the Volunteer Coordinaor before being assigned to any patients. Interns will be assigned patients to visit and will write visit notes to be turned in to the volunteer coordinator within three days of the visit. All interns are expected make appointments for visits with each patient/family and to keep those appointments unless they have notified both the family and the VC. The VC will complete assessments of the intern's performance for both Hometead Hospice's use and for the college supervisor.
Iterns will learn to operate within the HIPPA laws of privacy and all other regulations pertaining to the care of our patients. It is our goal that psychology interns will come away with an awareness of how to "be", how to listen, how to and when to speak to persons with a life limiting illness. Interns may be exposed to different, cultures, religions and family dynamics.
