DescriptionSince 1992, Icahn School of Medicine has been affiliated with Queens Hospital Center and with Elmhurst Hospital Center since 1964, members of New York City's municipal health care system (Health and Hospitals Corporation - HHC). Located in the borough of Queens, one of five counties composing New York City, the hospitals are located just 20 minutes from midtown Manhattan.
Queens Hospital Center is a 350-bed facility providing primary, secondary, and tertiary medical care, and is also a 911 Receiving Facility and Certified Heart Station. Queens Hospital offers a full spectrum of primary care and specialty treatment services, having special expertise in women's and children's health, as well as a dedicated AIDS Team. The hospital averages 14,000 admissions, 50,000 emergency room visits and 250,000 clinic visits per year. Additionally, the hospital runs two free-standing community health centers nearby and has recently broken ground for the rebuilding of its main inpatient facility.
Elmhurst Hospital Center is one of the 11 acute care hospitals that compose New York City’s municipal health care system. The hospital provides primary, secondary, and tertiary medical care for the one million residents of western Queens. There are approximately 400,000 patient visits each year to the hospital’s clinics. The emergency service is a 911 receiving center for ambulances provided by the City’s Emergency Services and a level I trauma center. It receives 62,000 visits on the adult service and another 45,000 pediatric and 8,000 psychiatric visits. Approximately 23,000 patients are admitted to the inpatient services each year, and the overall occupancy rate exceeds 90 percent.
ResponsibilitiesThe Human Resources Intern will provide support to the various priority initiatives of the Human Resources Department. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. Administrative support including the assembly of new hire orientation packages; assembly, filing and maintenance of personnel folders; auditing files for Joint Commission readiness and other regulatory purposes.
2. Conduct research into various human resource related topics including recruitment and on-boarding; turnover and retention management, performance management; training and employee development, management and leadership development, employee recognition, compensation and compensation analysis; employee and labor relations and; benefits management.
3. Assist with special projects such as benefits orientation, compensation projects, time and leave project and building the Human Resources website.
4. Other duties as assigned.
RequirementsHS diploma or GED.
Current enrollment in an accredited credit bearing undergraduate or graduate school program, with an interest in Human Resources.
Office experience including creating documents using various software programs required.
Telephone experience including conducting surveys desired
Proficient use of the Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to carry out assigned projects to completion.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Must be a self-starter, able to work independently.
Ability to multi-task, manage confidential information and pay attention to detail within strict deadlines.
Enrollment in HR Degree Program preferred.
