Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (chinco.fws.gov) Wildlife Biology Program Internship: Breeding Shorebird Monitoring Summer Internship Application Period: December 14, 2012 February 8, 2013 Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuges Shorebird Management Internship is a field experience unlike any other! There are three unique barrier islands for which interns can submit their application materials; Assateague, Assawoman, and Cedar Islands. You must indicate in your cover letter one or more of the islands for which you are applying. Benefits: Bunkhouse style co-ed lodging located on Assateague Island; every seasonal may have one or more assigned roommate of the same gender. Stipend of $154/wk paid bi-monthly. ASSATEAGUE ISLAND: 1 Intern for 18 weeks; April 15, 2012 Aug 16, 2012 2 Interns for 12 weeks; May 20, 2012 Aug 09, 2012 Applicants must have background in GPS/GIS. Should be comfortable operating a 4x4 vehicle, be willing to drive over sand and may participate in ATV operation training. Strong communication skills are a must, as Assateague Island is a tourist destination. Must be physically capable of hauling and constructing predator exclosures around nest quickly. ASSAWOMAN ISLAND: 2 Interns for 18 weeks; April 15, 2012 Aug 16, 2012 The applicant should be comfortable operating a 4x4 vehicle, be willing to drive over sand and may participate in ATV operation training. Includes Metompkin Island and a Chincoteague Bay American oystercatcher breeding survey route only accessible by boat without onsite facilities. Must be comfortable around water, working on a boat, and working for several hours at a time in remote locations. Preferably, the incumbent will have experience navigating coastal waterways. Intern will be required to apply for and pass a NASA Security Clearance upon hiring in order to gain access to work site. CEDAR ISLAND: 3 Interns for 18 weeks; April 15, 2012 Aug 16, 2012 Cedar Island is a remote island which requires daily travel of 40 minutes by car and 15-30 minutes by boat. The applicant must be comfortable around water, working on a boat, working for several hours at a time in a remote location. Must be capable or walking for up to 7 miles per day carrying necessary field equipment up to 25lbs. Preferably, the incumbent will have experience navigating coastal waterways. Daily access to this field site is highly dependent upon weather and tide; therefore, the daily and weekly work schedule will fluctuate. OVERVIEW OF SINGLE STOP USA, INC. Single Stop USA is dedicated to helping low-income individuals and families in America achieve economic security. We do this by providing participants with an innovative package of cost-free, individualized support that incorporates screening for, and access to, critical government resources with all-important financial counseling, tax preparation, and legal assistance. Single Stop was piloted in 2001 by the Robin Hood Foundation as a New York City-based antipoverty program. As such, the program was designed to work through trusted community-based organizations to help needy individuals and families access public resources set aside to help them build economic security. By 2006, Single Stop was serving more than 70,000 households annually at 59 community partnerships. As a result of this city-wide success, Single Stop USA was established in 2007 with a mandate to expand nationally. This process began in 2009 with the launch of the Community College Initiative. This program targets low-income community college students who struggle to complete the education they need to enter, or advance in, the workforce a struggle that is primarily due to financial insecurity. To date, Single Stops work at eighteen community college campuses in seven states (CA, NM, NY, NJ, FL, LA, MA) is helping vulnerable students overcome obstacles to staying in school, thus increasing their ability to graduate with skills that translate into job/career/entrepreneurial readiness, higher earnings, and financial security. INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW Single Stop USA's Legal Intern will work closely with and support SSUSAs Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel. The Legal Intern will help on a wide variety of legal matters including employment law, terms and conditions, IP issues and contract law. This position also offers excellent opportunities to work with SSUSAs pro-bono counsel and gain valuable experience working as in house counsel at a nonprofit in a number of legal fields. The position is unpaid but interested candidates will be encouraged to work for credit. If the candidate is ineligible for coursework credit, they will be eligible for a transportation stipend. Mission Statement: The National Coalition for the Homeless, founded in 1982, is a national network of people who are currently experiencing homelessness or who were once homeless, activists and advocates, community and faith-based homeless service providers, and others committed to a single mission. That mission, our common bond, is to end homelessness. We are committed to creating the systemic and attitudinal changes necessary to prevent and end homelessness. At the same time, we work to meet the immediate needs of people who are either currently homeless or at risk of homelessness. We take as our first principle of practice that people who are currently experiencing homelessness or have formerly experienced homelessness must be actively involved in all of our work. Organizational Goals: The National Coalition for the Homeless remains a substantive voice in the federal legislative process for people who are experiencing homelessness. In our policy advocacy, we work diligently to ensure that mainstream resources and opportunities are available to families and individuals who are either homeless or at risk of homelessness. To end homelessness in the U.S., we use the following strategies to accomplish our mission: lobbying, policy analysis, litigation, public education, community organizing, research and technical assistance.

Organization Description Free the Slaves (FTS) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to ending modern slavery worldwide. Founded in 2000, FTS partners with grassroots organizations in six countries to free people from slavery, help them rebuild their lives, and do what it takes to end slavery in their communities. Current partners include local anti-slavery organizations in Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Brazil, India and Nepal. Informed by on-the-ground work and in-depth research, we then bring real-world solutions to policymakers and business leaders in the areas of policy, research, slave-free trade and communications, engage in high-profile advocacy campaigns on the federal and international level, and share compelling stories that inspire individuals to act and to build a global movement against slavery. FTS is headquartered in Washington DC. Internship Program Description The Free the Slaves internship program is a formal effort to develop and train future leaders of the anti-slavery movement. We seek to provide each participant with training and hands-on experience in various facets of anti-slavery work. The program operates out of the Washington, DC office of Free the Slaves on a semester system, with three sessions per year: Spring (January to May), Summer (June to August), and Fall (September to December). Participants are expected to participate in an orientation session at the beginning of each semester. Internships are unpaid but students are often able to arrange academic credit, as Free the Slaves internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by FTS staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to federal and international anti-slavery advocacy. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

The Center for Aerosol and Nanomaterials Engineering at RTI International is offering a Nanobiotechnology Research Internship for undergraduate and graduate students for Summer 2013. The use of metal oxide nanomaterials in industrial, household, and medicinal products (e.g. cosmetics, paints, and implantable devices) is increasingly widespread and contact with these materials is not only unavoidable, but exposure is often intentional. The intern will have an integral role in research efforts to further understand and predict the effects of metal oxide nanomaterials and how these man-made materials interact with biological processes. Furthermore, the intern will collaborate with leading nanotechnology experts to evaluate metal oxide nanomaterials to protect human health and the environment, leading to possible research publication co-authorship.
