THE POSITION: We are seeking one or two Web Design, Web development and/or Website Administration Interns to support the roll out of the HSH.news Portal. The selected Intern(s) will work to implement existing and planned web design and development tasks. Interns will also help maintain and update our database and participate in developing the end user experience, to include a roll out of our social media presence.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR: Ideal Interns will be self-motivated and detail oriented individuals, be creative, have excellent communication and English writing skills, be comfortable working in a fluid team based environment (sometimes with minimal guidance) and be adept at working on web and technology-based projects. We prefer candidates who are comfortable with one or more of the following: HTML, Cascading Style Sheet (CSS), Javascript, DotNetNuke 2.0, database development.

Required experience:
Prefer Web Design and/or Web Development Experience, can be professional or academic: 1 year

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
-Design, implement and maintain various web applications. This includes interacting with project owners/leads from various internal groups to analyze requirements, designing, coding, debugging and testing.
-Create, customize and maintain interactive web applications
-Develop and maintain web applications for a diverse audience, such as student internship and workshop registrations and submissions
-Develop and maintain web-related databases, data flows, and web-based APIs using RSS and structured data such as XML, images, PDFs, and Youtube videos
-Provide miscellaneous IT support including basic troubleshooting and interfacing with the outside systems administrator.
-Work closely with other developers on the team to find solutions for difficult problems
-Document all technical inquiries, develop and review content for wiki-based knowledge-base
-Perform other related duties as required

Requirements

Job Specifications (Knowledge, Skill and Ability Requirements):
1 year of experience developing applications in PHP with strong object-oriented analysis and design skills
Development experience in PHP, HTML, CSS, Linux, MySQL, Javascript and AJAX
Experience with Code Igniter and Expression Engine is preferred
Experience with a modern Javascript framework (jQuery, Backbone, Angular, Ember) a plus
Experience with a modern design framework (LESS, SCSS, SASS, Twitter Bootstrap) a plus
Ability to work at the UNIX command line level when needed, using basic shell scripting and commands such as sftp, scp, ssh, find, chmod, chown, etc.
Self starter, with the ability to identify and pursue improvements independently
Familiarity with video delivery methods such as Flash, QuickTime or HTML5 and with managing and presenting them online.
Demonstrated experience delivering a successful product from conception to shipment.
Knowledge and use of design patterns would be a plus
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Educational/Experience Requirements:
The minimum level of education and experience for this position includes:
-Bachelors degree in Computer Science, IT or equivalent professional experience, and 1 year experience in Web/IT administration OR an Earth Science-related degree with 1 year experience in Web/IT administration
-Ability to work collegially with diverse personalities including other staff, members of company, and educational partners
-Demonstrated interest in developing educational applications is preferred
