2013 Baltimore Internships

Assist the MedStar Harbor Hospital marketing and community relations department in the following areas: creation of news articles for internal publications, monthly health columns for local papers, fliers for internal promotion, support for community outreach seminars and Web updates. The interns responsibilities may be altered based on the needs of the department and the interns requests. The internship lasts one semester, and the intern may receive school credit.

The CHIP Mentoring Program is a program of Alternative Directions, Inc (ADI). As an extension of ADI's mission to serve those in prison and being released from prison, the CHIP Program serves children of incarcerated adults by matching these children with mentors from the Baltimore area. Any Baltimore City child, ages 6 - 17, whose parent is/was in prison is eligible to participate in the program. The CHIP Program also provides case management and other support services for these children and families. The CHIP Program, like the majority of mentoring programs around the United States, faces a continual lack of male volunteers. About 80% of CHIP mentors are female. While boys in the program are often matched with female mentors, many boys remain on the waiting list for months or years because of the lack of male mentors available. The Male Engagement Coordinator will work closely with the program director over 4 months to develop a male recruitment effort to engage males around from around the Baltimore area. This will include mentoring a boy on the CHIP waiting list; conducting informational interviews with male mentors and mentees; and contacting and visiting 4 to 6 local organizations to represent the CHIP Program and present the opportunities for men to get involved. Intern will work with our outreach department, experiencing a wide range of duties including developing trainings, volunteer recruitment, volunteer management, business processes, non-profit management, and much more. We are focusing on engaging the Hispanic population in our area and need someone to assist with outreach, programing and translation of materials. Duties: Individual will primarily work off-refuge at a large public school system, and will provide quality environmental educational experiences for students, technical expertise to teachers and faculty, and promote the National Wildlife Refuge Systems role in creating environmental awareness among urban populations. Employee will work with public school system and its partners to deliver value added environmental education programs; assist senior FWS and public school staff with development of internal and external partnerships; and assist with development/promotion of opportunities for service learning projects, such as recycling, schoolyard habitats, citizen science, etc. Individual will work primarily in Fairfax County, but will report periodically to Patuxent Research Refuge for specific assignments, training opportunities, etc. Day to day supervision will be by Fairfax County Public School System staff. Opportunity: Intern will be able to interact with a large number of environmental professionals and educators in formal and non-formal settings across the DC metro area and the State of Virginia. Intern will be part of a team establishing a relatively new program in environmental education in one of the largest school districts in the United States while also having the opportunity to work at a National Wildlife Refuge. Intern will experience first hand the implementation of the Eco Schools USA program across a school district.
