Yesterday's Island/Today's Nantucket is now accepting applications for a summer internship. We are a print and electronic publishing company that produces a weekly summer guide to Nantucket, the website Nantucket.net, and The Nantucket Directory. To apply for this internship, send two writing samples (essay or article -- do not send us your last term paper) with a cover letter that explains why you want a career in publishing, what experience you have writing or working for a publication, what topics interest you, and what sets you apart from others who might apply. Our intern (yes, we only accept one per season) will be introduced to many aspects of publishing and should be prepared to enthusiastically tackle every job assigned, whether it be writing an article that is due the next day, proofreading, dealing with clients, answering the phone, blogging, tweeting, delivering papers, or anything else that a small publishing company does. Housing is not included and can be difficult to find on Nantucket. This is a paid internship, but at "intern wages" not professional compensation.
Writing articles assigned, answering the telephone, proofreading, blogging, client contact, delivery, occasional filing. STUDENTS AND RECENT GRADUATES MAY APPLY.
Must have excellent communication skills, at least two years of journalism or English courses or equivalent experience, must have a valid driver's license, must have sufficient spelling + grammar skills to proofread well, must be able to meet a deadline, must be able to take a bland press release and re-write it so that it is appealing to readers. Our intern will use professional publishing software--we do not expect proficiency, but we do expect the intern to be able to learn the computer program(s) needed to finish the job. Nantucket is a resort town: if you are here to party, do not bother to apply. We have a deadline every week that must be met.
