DescriptionBEN started a year ago as a resource for Chinese nationals looking to adopt an English name. Choosing an English name is a standard practice among a lot of Chinese young people. Historically Chinese people have looked for an ‘English’ alternative name to make it easier English speakers. The English name selection process, however, was incredibly flawed.
BestEnglishName.com, created by Lindsay Jernigan, was born out of necessity. While living and working in China, Lindsay met colleagues and many others with bizarre English names, for example, Gary as a girl, Furry, Green, Mars, Bones, and Swallow. She witnessed the effects that these ill-fitting names were having on one’s career and relationships. BestEnglishName.com is the only website created by a native English speaker to help Chinese people select an English name.
At BestEnglishName.com it is our mission to grow and expand our content to bridge the gap between Chinese students and his or her experience abroad. Imagine you hare headed to University in Iowa. You have spent your whole life in a second-tier city in China and never been to the US. You are far from your family, in a new environment, with a new language. You don’t understand what campus culture, dorm culture, Scantrons, or even how to open a bank account.
We would like you to become part of the team and help bridge the gap between Chinese students and an American University experience. Your writing assignments will be your own ideas, writing, and pictures. We hope to create a team of contributors that embody our mission – which is this:
We want to create a platform that shares information across cultures to Chinese students and people going abroad, so that they can feel empowered to fully immerse in a new culture and have the most fulfilling abroad experience possible.
ResponsibilitiesYour responsibilities will include:
Contributing in all different types of media - content on a weekly basis. This content can be anything from short video content, a blog post, an infographic, an interview etc. You will be given as much direction as you need, but you are also expected to think creatively and come up with some of your own topics and content ideas!
You would need to have time for a weekly call with the team as well as email communication throughout the week.
The overall time commitment per week would be anywhere from 2-8 hours
