Newspaper journalists must research and write stories for regional and local press. As well as news, politics, this staff reporter will report on sports, art culture, science and business. Moreover, also cover local events, entertainment and human interest stories.
Traditionally, junior reporters write up stories allocated to them by the news desk and pass these stories to a news editor.
Currently, we are without a news desk individual so you will had the completed work to the editor until further notice.
Other roles are to include correspondents, in your field or location and are to reply back in a more personal style.
This is smaller news forum so you many have to multitask; you are to work on layout, photography and sub-editing as well as stories.
Newspaper journalism is becoming increasingly multi-platform, making IT, web and broadcast skills highly valued in this position.
The articles must be no more than:
• 800 words
• 3,500 characters (no space)
• 3,000 characters (space)
• 11 paragraphs
• 45 lines
Typical work activities
• interviewing people in a range of different circumstances;
• building contacts to maintain a flow of news, for example, police and emergency services, local council, community groups, health trusts, press officers from a variety of organisations, the general public, etc;
• seeking out and investigating stories via your contacts, press releases and other media;
• attending press conferences and asking questions;
• attending a variety of events, such as council meetings, magistrates’ court proceedings, football matches, talent contests, etc;
• answering the phones on the news desk and reacting to breaking news stories;
• working closely with the news team, photographers and editors;
• recording interviews and meetings using shorthand or technical equipment;
• producing concise and accurate copy according to the newspaper’s house style and to strict deadlines – daily newspapers may have several each day;
• writing short ‘fillers’ to entertain, and researching and writing longer feature articles, sometimes for subsidiary publications and supplements;
• creating and uploading news content for the newspaper website;
• ‘live’ online reporting or real-time blogging when covering important events – a growing area of work, especially on national newspapers.
Responsibilities- Assist with editorial projects and provide support to the Communications Editor.
- Proofreading both hard and electronic files, basic copyediting, and writing of proposals and reports;
- Assisting with or proofing of basic ads, flyers, brochures, invitations, etc.
- Work on special projects, as needed
Requirements- Working towards a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, English, business communications, or communication arts.
- Strong organizational and communication skills with keen attention to detail and problem solving skills
- Knowledge of MS Office applications, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Experience/interest in Web maintenance
- Familiarity with Adobe In Design and Adobe Acrobat is a plus
